EXCEL Sport Program

Victorian Under 18 Ultimate Frisbee State Representatives

Following the success of the EXCEL Sport Program at the Ultimate Frisbee High School State Titles over the recent years, our students were invited to trial for the Under 18 Victorian State Team. Two of our students, Fyodor Peters and Hayley Tasker attended the trials and were selected in the Victorian State team which played in the National Tournament over the July holidays in Queensland.

‘While they were the youngest on the squad, they both displayed exemplary leadership and on-field effort. A huge credit to the EXCEL Sport program!’ – Simon Talbot State Coach & Selector

‘My experience with ultimate Victoria was wonderful, I learned lots of new skills and techniques that I can use for the future. As well as being able to meet new people and to have a feeling of playing in front of lots of people for your state was amazing. I would love to it again.’ – Fyodor Peters

‘Playing for Victoria was an incredible experience. I got to make new friends who love the sport and learnt so many new things. But most of all I got to play a sport I love. I would definitely want to do it again and maybe play for Australia.’ - Hayley Tasker

Congratulations Fyodor and Hayley.

Year 7 -10 EXCEL Sport Netball Victoria School Championships

On Tuesday 8th August, Patterson River Secondary College entered seven teams in the Netball Victoria School Championships from the Year 7-10 EXCEL Sports Program. The tournament was held at the State Netball Hockey Centre in Parkville and is open to Government, Catholic and Independent schools from around the state. Throughout the course of the day, our teams played a total of 36 games, each lasting 14 minutes. It was a fantastic experience for the students to play in a world class facility and develop their netball skills. The top team in each division/pool had the opportunity to qualify for the State finals day on 5th September. For the first time in the history of attending this event, we had a team finish undefeated throughout the day after playing 6 games and qualifying for the next round. Congratulations to the Year 8 Boys EXCEL Sports students (Tyson Bowe, Tyler Dudley-Maude, Xavier Ese, Cooper Fox, Alex Jones, Jimmy Robinson, Tyson Rowley, Casper Simmons, Jireh Upkett, and Jack Winter).

Thank you to Mr. Cashmore and Mr. Hayes for your tireless efforts throughout the long day.

2023 Year 8 EXCEL Sport 3x3 Basketball Junior State Championships

On Monday 24th July, 2 teams from the Year 8 EXCEL Sport class that had previously qualified for the 3x3 Basketball State Championships competed at the State Basketball Centre in the Division 2 competition against the 12 best schools in Victoria. The PRSC 1 team (Nathan Poole, Jireh Upkett, Alex Jones and Tyson Bowe) played 5 games in Pool A and finished 2nd after winning 4 out of 5 games. The PRSC 2 team (Hendrix Flood, Tyson Rowley, Tommy Chalmers and Xavier Ese) played 6 games in Pool B and finished 3rd after winning 4 out of 6 games. Unfortunately, this meant our 2 teams played against each other in the State Quarter Finals and it was the closest of games with PRSC 1 winning 8-7. The PRSC 1 team played a semi- final game against SMBG Senior Boys and unfortunately lost 8-12. They came out strongly in the 3rd place match, beating Mordialloc College 13-8 and taking out the 3rd place medal to finish 3rd in the State in the Division 2 competition. A fantastic effort by both teams against tough competition. Thank you to Jack Winter for volunteering to score and assistant coach and the parents that came along to support the students.

Year 9 EXCEL Sport Vic Schools Rugby Touch 7s Championships

On Tuesday 1st August the Year 9 EXCEL Sport class entered 2 teams into the Vic Schools Rugby Touch 7s Championships at Melbourne University Rugby Union Club in Parkville. The game is the Rugby Union version of Touch Football and is the only mixed competition the EXCEL Sport Program competes in. The PRSC teams were in 2 different pools and competed in a round robin tournament against 5 other schools in each pool. The winner of each of the 2 pools competed in the State Touch 7s Grand Final.

Both teams were fantastic throughout the day, displaying an excellent skill level, athleticism, and game sense to compete against experienced Rugby and Touch players. The students were all extremely coachable and keen to improve throughout the day. The PRSC 2 team played well together and had a couple of narrow losses which meant they missed the Grand Final. The PRSC 1 team won every game in the pool rounds and qualified for the Grand Final against Sunshine College. The grand final was an excellent display of team offence and defence and at the final siren the PRSC 1 team won 10 - 5. It was a fantastic achievement to be crowned champions in the State in Rugby Touch 7s. I am extremely proud of the students and their competitiveness throughout the competition.

Thank you to Mr. McLoughlin for his assistance and coaching throughout the day.

Year 9 & 10 3X3 Basketball Intermediate State Championships

On Wednesday 26th July, 3 teams from the Year 9-10 EXCEL Sport classes competed at the State Basketball Centre in the Division 1 and 2 Basketball Victoria 3x3 Basketball Intermediate State Competition against the 12 best schools in Victoria in each division. The 2 Year 10 Boys teams competed admirably throughout the preliminary rounds against basketball academy schools and pushed most teams resulting in some wins and narrow losses. The Girls PRSC Division 2 team (Riley Ese, Claudia McHugh, Alana Tullberg, Keira Light and Kasha Evans) played 5 games in Pool A and finished 1st in their pool after winning all of their games. After beating Beaconhills SC 17-6 in the Quarter Finals, the girls played in a semi-final against Kilbreda College. Unfortunately, we lost 3-5 in a tightly contested game and had to play Box Hill SC in a playoff for third. The girls once again hit their straps in this final and were awarded the 3rd place medal for the Division 2 3x3 intermediate State Finalists. A fantastic effort by all 3 teams against tough competition. Thank you to Ollie Gleeson for volunteering to score and assistant coach throughout the day.

SSV Junior Lacrosse State Championships

On Friday 8th September the Year 8 EXCEL Sport class entered 2 boys’ and 2 girls’ teams into the SSV Junior Lacrosse State Championships at Fawkner Park, South Yarra. After a four-week training block the students were well prepared for this event. At the end of the preliminary rounds, Patterson River had 2 out of the 4 teams playing off in a grand final. The Patterson River Boys Apples team had only lost 1 game throughout the day against Williamstown High who were undefeated and strong favorites to take out the event in the final. The Apples shot off to an early lead and rattled their opposition to take out the grand final 14-7 with an awesome display of team defence and offence. An absolutely amazing effort to be crowned the Junior State Lacrosse State Champions. The Girls Patterson River Hearts team played a hard-fought contest against Sandringham College to finish as State Runners Up.  I am extremely proud of the growth and improvement from the class in very difficult conditions. A fantastic day for the students and the College. Thank you to Mr. Walton for his assistance throughout the day.
