ARUP INDUSTRY INSIGHT SESSION:

On Friday the 14th of November, a group of our Year 9 & 10 STEM students attended an inspiring and highly interactive Industry Insight session at global engineering and design consultancy ARUP in Melbourne's CBD. It was exciting to learn that Arup’s first project in London was building the Penguin Pool at the London Zoo, and in Australia was to design the iconic Sydney Opera House, setting the tone for a day filled with fun, creativity, innovation and real-world problem solving.

The session began with a panel of Arup professionals who shared their personal stories and diverse career pathways across engineering, design, project management and consulting. Students then teamed up for a fast-paced STEM challenge, to design, purchase and build a 'floating house' capable of holding weight using set materials and resources within a budget. The task sparked teamwork, strategic thinking and plenty of laughter, as groups put their 'float' designs to the test with marbles.

CESC students were also taken on a tour of Arup’s sustainably designed Melbourne headquarters including:

• The 3D printing room, where complex prototypes and models come to life, and students were able to interact with multiple materials.

• The light lab, where students experienced how different lighting and colours can create a tone, mood, experience and be used for different purposes.

• Interactive spaces showcasing Arup’s innovative and sustainable approach to design, management and problem-solving.
