Principal Office visit
For our Prep students’ “I Go to Bittern Primary School” booklet, we visited Mrs Herbert’s office to help inform and inspire our drawings. The Prep/1 students were very interested in learning about Mrs Herbert’s role and the responsibilities she undertakes each day. During our visit, Mrs Herbert also shared a preview of the plans for our new school entrance, which generated great excitement among the students.
Our Prep students have been working diligently on their “Going to School” books. Throughout this unit, they have been developing their understanding of important early literacy concepts, including letters, words, sentences, punctuation, directionality when reading, and other key concepts of print.
Students matched sentences about attending Art, Auslan, Library, Digital Technology, and PE/PMP, and created illustrations to complement these sentences. It has been wonderful to see their growing confidence and pride in their work as they build foundational reading and writing skills. Our Year 1 students wrote about being at school. All Year 1 students have made a great start to correct letter formation and placing their writing on dotted thirds.
Pancake Day
On Pancake Day we all enjoyed some yummy pancakes cooked by 'Bert' and our fabulous ES support staff. Thank you to everyone who donated supplies to help make this a fun event for the whole school.
Sounds Write
Our Foundation students have been learning to read, write and spell words with the letters 'a, i, m, s, t, n, o and p'. They have been working on their letter formation, sounding out words to blend to read and segment to spell words like sat, sit, mat, mop, nap and write sentences like 'I sat on the mat.' They have been learning about directionality when reading and writing, and concepts of print. Great work!!
Year 1 Sounds Write
Year 1 students have started learning the 'Sounds Write Extended Code'. They have focused on the long 'a' sound, spelling words like play, great, steak, tail and cake.
Text focus: Our Class is a Family
In Reading and Writing this term, we have been exploring three beautiful picture story books: Starting School, Alexander’s Outing and Our Class is a Family. Through these texts, students have been developing important comprehension skills, including making predictions, identifying characters and settings, discussing the main idea, and making meaningful text-to-self connections. We have also been building our vocabulary by exploring new and interesting words from each story.
A special focus has been on the message from Our Class is a Family, as we have discussed what it means to belong, support one another, and work together as a caring classroom community. Students commented that they liked our class because 'We all treat each other like siblings', 'They teach me lots of things', 'Everyone is kind', 'They share', 'It feels like home'.
Mathematics
Students have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We learnt about the attributes of shapes and used our pattern blocks to design our own drawings. We also made 'shape monsters'. Our Prep students have also been practising to write the numerals to 10 or beyond with the correct formation.
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support
We have continued to focus on positive behaviours in all areas of our school. This program aims to create safe, positive, and inclusive environments and focuses on teaching expected behaviors, improving student social/emotional wellbeing. We have learnt about active listening, transitions (moving) around the school, showing respect, being responsible and demonstrating team work. We follow these procedures around the whole school - in our learning spaces, our specialist classes, outside when we play, when we move around the school, in the toilets and when we use digital technology.
Relaxing at recess and lunch time!
