Year 2

In our Year 2 classroom, School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) helps create a safe, respectful and positive learning environment for all students. We explicitly teach and model our school expectations, and students practise what these behaviours look like in the classroom, in the yard and during learning time. We focus on being safe, respectful and responsible, and we acknowledge students when they demonstrate these behaviours. Clear routines, consistent language and positive reinforcement help our students understand what is expected and support them to make good choices every day.
Literacy:
Students have been enjoying reading Under the Southern Cross as we explore what it means to live beneath this special constellation. We have been discussing what we can see under the Southern Cross, including Australia’s unique landscapes, animals and night skies, and using these ideas to inspire our writing. Students have been describing the features of our country and explaining why they are special to us. We have also been learning to use conjunctions such as and, but, so, or and because to make our sentences more detailed and interesting. It has been wonderful to see students confidently joining their ideas together to create more engaging pieces of writing.
Maths:
In Maths, our Year 2 students have been building confidence in addition and developing their skip counting skills. We have been practising our fluency facts to 10 and 20 so students can quickly and accurately recall number combinations. Alongside this, we have been exploring skip counting by 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s, helping students recognise number patterns and strengthen their understanding of place value. It has been wonderful to see students becoming more confident and efficient mathematicians as they explain their thinking and apply these skills in different learning activities. We completed this unit by creating some fun jumping frogs.
Science: Forces
In Science, Year 2 students have been investigating how changing the strength of a force affects the movement of objects. We have explored real-world examples of pushes and pulls, discussing how using more or less force can move objects different distances — even large objects. Students have been sharing their ideas and making predictions about what might happen when the strength of a push or pull changes. To demonstrate their understanding, students conducted an exciting investigation using a toy car launcher, carefully measuring how different force strengths affect the distance the car travels. It has been fantastic to see their curiosity and scientific thinking in action!
Special Events: Pancake Day.
Students thoroughly enjoyed coming together to celebrate Pancake Day. There was a wonderful sense of excitement as everyone shared in this special tradition, enjoying delicious pancakes and spending time with their classmates. It was a lovely opportunity to build connections, practise gratitude and create happy memories together as a Year 2 community.
