Year Six

It has been a busy and exciting fortnight in Year 6 as students continued preparing for Exhibition and began their new Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry.

Exhibition

Students explored the five Approaches to Learning: thinking, research, communication, social and self-management skills. Through group discussions, activities and reflections, they considered how these important skills will help them work independently and collaboratively throughout the Exhibition process.

Sharing the Planet

Year 6 students launched their new Unit of Inquiry by exploring biodiversity and the importance of protecting the natural world. They have begun investigating threats to biodiversity caused by human activity, with a particular focus on deforestation and habitat destruction. Students are developing an understanding of how these actions affect plants, animals and entire ecosystems.

Reading and Writing

In Reading, students explored the features of nonfiction texts and practised identifying main ideas, key vocabulary and important information. They also learnt how to summarise information, take effective notes and understand the difference between diagrams and photographs.

Students then extended these skills by separating fact from opinion, identifying bias and analysing the evidence authors use. They also compared information from multiple sources and interpreted graphs, statistics and maps.

In Writing, students developed their scientific vocabulary and created informative paragraphs about biodiversity. They focused on writing clear topic sentences, including supporting facts and explaining cause-and-effect relationships. Students are now learning to use information from reliable sources and finish their writing with a persuasive call to action.

Mathematics

Our Mathematics focus has been fractions. Students began by adding and subtracting fractions with common and different denominators. They then progressed to multiplying and dividing fractions, converting between mixed numerals and improper fractions, and solving problems involving all four operations.

We are proud of the enthusiasm, curiosity and collaboration demonstrated by our Year 6 students throughout Weeks 3 and 4. We look forward to seeing their inquiries continue to develop!
