Year Two
Greetings Year 2 parents and carers,
It has been another busy and exciting few weeks in Year 2! Students have continued to build their skills across all learning areas, with many opportunities to make connections, investigate, create and share their thinking. Our current learning about the human body has generated lots of curiosity, questions and enthusiasm across the cohort.
Reading
In Reading, students have continued exploring the work of Bob Graham, making connections across a range of his texts including The Concrete Garden, Jigsaw and How to Heal a Broken Wing. Students have been developing their ability to make text-to-self, text-to-text and text-to-world connections, helping them think more deeply about characters, themes and messages.
More recently, students have explored visual literacy and inferring, using clues from illustrations, facial expressions and body language to understand what characters may be thinking and feeling. They have also responded creatively to The Concrete Garden by creating their own chalk artwork inspired by the story's message.
Writing
In Writing, our learning has connected closely with our Inquiry into the human body. Students researched body systems and used their new knowledge to create informative posters, including labelled diagrams, facts about how their chosen system works and healthy choices that help look after our bodies.
Students are now continuing to develop their independence as writers. They are selecting their own ideas and purposes for writing and applying the writing process of Ideas → Plan → Draft → Revise → Edit → Publish. They are also using our ARMS and CUPS strategies to strengthen and polish their writing.
Maths
In Mathematics, students have been busy developing their measurement skills. They investigated mass and capacity, making predictions, measuring and comparing objects and containers, and using mathematical language such as heavier, lighter, more than, less than and the same as. Students particularly enjoyed the hands-on investigations where they could test their predictions and discuss their findings.
We are now focussing on position and location, where students are learning to give and follow directions using positional language and locate positions using simple maps, grids and coordinates. We have even linked this learning to Inquiry by considering where different organs are positioned in relation to one another within the human body.
Inquiry
Our current Unit of Inquiry continues to generate plenty of excitement as students investigate the human body, its systems and how we can make healthy choices to care for ourselves. Students have been asking questions, researching different body systems and sharing their learning in creative ways.
This week, we are especially excited to welcome 'Mad about Science' for our Human Body Incursion. Students took part in a hands-on workshop exploring how different parts and systems of the body work together. Experiences included exploring major organs, investigating digestion, listening to heartbeats, testing reaction times and learning about the nervous system.
