Year Five 

We have had another wonderful and productive fortnight in Year 5. Students have continued to demonstrate enthusiasm, curiosity and resilience across all learning areas. It has been fantastic to see them building their confidence as they collaborate with their peers, think critically and take increasing ownership of their learning.

Reading

This fortnight, students have continued reading our class novel, The Boy at the Back of the Class, while developing a range of important comprehension strategies. They explored foreshadowing, inferencing and sequencing, learning how authors carefully organise events and provide clues that help readers make predictions and develop a deeper understanding of the text.

They have continued to participate in their weekly Book Club discussions, where they summarise their reading, ask thoughtful questions and make meaningful connections with their chosen novels.

Maths

In Mathematics, students have continued exploring the topic of Statistics. They have investigated different ways to collect, represent and interpret data using bar graphs, pie charts and line graphs, while learning how each graph can communicate information effectively.

Students have also developed their ability to analyse data by identifying trends, comparing information and solving real-world problems using graphs. They also consolidated their understanding of mean, median and mode through engaging mathematical investigations that required them to explain and justify their thinking.

Writing

In Writing, students have continued developing their information report writing skills. They analysed a range of information texts to identify the features of effective writing and used these examples to develop success criteria for their own reports.

Students also explored ways to improve their writing by varying sentence beginnings and using more complex sentence structures. They then began planning their own information reports by developing research questions, conducting research and organising information using Cornell note-taking strategies.

Inquiry

This fortnight, students have continued exploring our Unit of Inquiry with the central idea: "Access to opportunities may affect equality for all."

Students investigated how different circumstances can influence people's opportunities and explored the importance of equality, inclusion and responsibility. Through provocations, discussions and collaborative learning experiences, they examined the actions of individuals who have created positive change and began researching topics that connect to issues they are passionate about. These learning experiences have encouraged students to think critically about how they can contribute to creating a fairer and more inclusive community.
