Beginning Of Term 4:

The Green Team – Aussie Bird Count.

At our recent meeting members participated in the Aussie Bird Count, a project of BirdLife Australia. It provides a national snapshot of the number of birds in our schoolyards, parks and gardens which in turn indicates the health of our environment.

Volunteers from all over Australia conduct bird counts, held for a week during October. On the day we did the count already 2,322,445 birds had been counted!

It was a sunny day when we strolled outside and, shaded by huge gum trees, did the count. The bird count is completed in 20 minutes and, during that time, we saw 203 birds from 9 different species.

We are delighted to be part of this project which will assist scientists understand bird populations and behaviours during these challenging times of climate change.

Congratulations SOC - another box of batteries sent for recycling.

Thank you to members of the SOC community for continuing to recycle your batteries. We have now sent TEN boxes of batteries for recycling.

Batteries are made of both valuable and hazardous materials. More than 95% of the materials in batteries can be recycled which ensures these materials are used again - often to make new batteries.

All batteries pose a potential hazard. They contain harmful substances including mercury, cadmium, and lead. These chemicals can be dangerous if they are mixed with other types of waste in garbage or recycling bins and can cause fires. When batteries are sent to landfill the toxic chemicals inside them leak into the soil and waterways, threatening wildlife and human health.
