Beginning of Term 4:
Science Department Update – Term 4
The end of the 2025 academic year is fast approaching, with exams beginning in Week 6. Most Science classes are now completing their final topics and shifting their focus toward exam revision. It’s important that all students start preparing early, consistent study over several weeks is far more effective than cramming the night before.
Here are my top tips for achieving success in your Science exams:
1. Practice, practice, practice The single most effective way to improve your results is to complete as many practice questions as possible. Research shows a strong link between the number of questions completed and higher VCE study scores. Students who score 40+ typically complete nearly twice as many practice questions as others. The more questions you attempt, the more confident and exam-ready you’ll become.
2. Challenge yourself Real learning happens when your brain works hard to recall information from long-term memory. If your study feels “too easy,” you’re probably not learning much new. Avoid passive strategies like rereading your textbook or copying notes they feel productive but don’t strengthen your understanding. Instead, focus on testing yourself, explaining concepts aloud, or tackling tough problems that stretch your thinking.
3. Master your vocabulary Science is like learning a new language, every topic introduces new words that unlock complex ideas. Make sure you understand key terms before moving on. My favourite method is using flashcards: you can make your own or use websites like Quizlet to create digital sets. The stronger your science vocabulary, the easier it will be to understand and answer exam questions clearly.
Oakleigh Primary School Visit
On the 22nd of October, we had the pleasure of working with the Grade 5 students from Oakleigh Primary School. The students had a fantastic day using our Small Lab to reinforce their learning in a fun and engaging way. They also participated in a design sprint, where they explored the question, “How might we help seabirds get clean and healthy again after they are covered in oil?”
As part of the activity, students conducted an experiment to investigate the most effective methods for cleaning oil from feathers. They then used their findings to design innovative and creative solutions to address this real-world environmental challenge.
Quantum Victoria STEM Careers Day
On the 23rd of October, the Year 9 Advanced Science class had the opportunity to attend the Quantum Victoria STEM Careers Day. Throughout the day, students heard from a diverse range of STEM professionals about the work they do and the career pathways that led them there.
The morning sessions featured a civil engineer who discussed their role in the North East Link project, a project manager from Zoos Victoria who shared insights into designing the new elephant enclosure at Werribee Zoo, and a clinical psychologist who spoke about gaming addiction and the key ingredients for building a meaningful and happy life.
In the afternoon, students took part in a series of hands-on workshops. They began by learning how locks and safes work from a master locksmith, even putting their skills to the test by attempting to crack a safe. Next, they explored bioengineering by creating their own nano-coating, before hearing from the ‘Plants for Space’ research team about their efforts to grow plants in space. The day concluded with a fascinating session led by forensic scientists from Victoria Police, who demonstrated how DNA evidence is collected and analysed.
The excursion was an engaging and inspiring experience that helped students connect their classroom learning to real-world STEM applications. It also gave them valuable insights into the wide range of career opportunities available in STEM.
