Science in Action: Year 3 explores Soil and its properties
Sanok Thenuwara, Year 6, Buckley House
Last week, the Year 3 students took part in a fun STEM lesson where they learnt all about soil and its properties. Through hands-on experiments, they explored different types of soil and how each reacts with water. To find out what they had learnt, we asked them a few questions about their experience.
What did you learn in your STEM lesson today?
"We learnt that there are six types of soil and studied their properties.
We learnt the different types of soil: metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous."
What was the most exciting part of the lesson for you?
"Pouring water into the soil and seeing what happens!
Experimenting with different types of soil was really fun!
When we used the sand scraper to smooth the soil."
Did you do any experiments or hands-on activities? What was your favourite?
"I liked all of them because they were really fun!
We didn’t use our hands much."
Was there anything that surprised you about what you learned?
"When I learnt the rocks /soil were different
Not really. I knew what I was doing!"
If you could improve or change something about your STEM lesson, what would it be?
"More time on the iPads so I can practice typing!
More data analysts."
Do you like science? Why or why not?
"I love it because we get to do fun activities!
Yes, learn cool stuff about rocks and soil."
What is your favourite thing about STEM lessons?
"I got to find the 3 different types of soil.
Building things, I think I’m pretty good at it!"
It was great to hear how much the Year 3s enjoyed their STEM lesson. They had an amazing experience exploring soil through fun activities. Their excitement and curiosity show how important it is to make learning both fun and meaningful. With such enthusiasm, the Year 3s are sure to keep having a great time in STEM! Science is all about discovering new things, and it looks like they had an amazing time doing just that!
