Buckley House Swimming

Olivia Papaevangelou, Year 6, Buckley House
On Wednesday the 4th of March, at 9am, Buckley House students made their way to the new sports centre to compete in the 2025 Swimming Carnival. Although it was only Years 3 to 6, the atmosphere was so busy and cheery. While Sherwood held their flag up proudly, and Thoresby stomped their feet against the wet slippery floor, Athelstane was running up and down cheering their team, and Lincoln was waving their pom-poms in the air.
It is the captain’s job to strongly support their team and make sure everyone is feeling okay to race, because they love seeing everyone try their best. Before the carnival, I interviewed each of the captains to find out how they felt about the upcoming event.
‘I loved seeing everyone trying their best!’ (Jack Wright - Thoresby Captain)
‘I love getting in the water and seeing my team score points for my house.’ (Kostas Papadopoulos - Sherwood Captain)
‘I love helping the 3s and 4s.’ (Emily Ahimastos - Athelstan Captain)
‘I love seeing everyone cheering for their friends, and it was one of the best experiences I have ever had.’ (Georgia Karasavvidis - Lincoln Captain)
During the events, watching everyone cheer and having fun, students were wondering, who would win, what the score would be, when their next event was, and if they could do the cheering competition, all of which show just how much the students care about doing their best.
The final outcome was very close, two teams were only 10 points apart and the other two teams were 10 points apart as well. All the students were sitting down with their eyes tightly closed and their hands clenched into fists. The captains were standing up front holding up their flags proudly, while the principal was about to give the final score. It was time. Thoresby in 4th place, Sherwood in 3rd place, in 2nd place Athelstane, and in 1st place Lincoln. The crowd went wild, and before anyone could even say anything, Lincoln jumped up in the air screaming and cheering. They couldn’t believe that they had won, they were so happy, and while the other teams were a little bit disappointed that they didn’t win, they still put a smile on for Lincoln and gave a round of applause.
At the end of the day everyone was extremely tired, and proud of what they had all achieved, it was one of the best days ever.
