Specialist Sport Athlete Highlights 2024
This year so far we have had many student athlete success stories from all year levels in Specialist Sport. These have been both representing the school and outside of school in their selected sports. The achievements are just a few ways that our great student athletes display school values and that... “impossible is just an opinion.”
Here are a few amazing examples of accomplishments that have been shared with us:
Lily Austin—Y7 Junior Specialist Sport
Lily has been an outstanding performer in her chosen field events of Long and Triple Jump. Her brilliant list of achievements include:
1st U14 Long Jump , Victorian Country Championships
2nd U14 Triple Jump, Victorian Country Championships
3rd U14 Triple Jump, Victorian State Championships
8th U14 Triple Jump, Australian National Track and Field Championships
Well Done Lily! Keep up the amazing work!
Ruby Cassidy—Y7 Junior Specialist Sport
Ruby attended the Easter Classic Basketball Tournament in Adelaide over the Easter holidays. A team of eight girls travelled across to Adelaide under Ballarat Domestic United (BDU) to take on the U14 girls from across Australia. The Easter Classic tournament saw over 560 teams entered over a 4-day competition run across Adelaide. The team competed hard and won by 1 point in the semi final to Western Australia after coming back from a 10-point lead. The team played their grand final against another Victorian team the Camberwell Dragons in a game full of cheering, clapping and encouragement from family, friends and other BDU (Ballarat Domestic United) on the sidelines. The team started off strong and continued the lead all the way up to the final siren winning the gold 29 to 17.
Casey Butterworth and Lena Wiltshir —Y8 Junior Specialist Sport
Casey and Lena have been selected in the Ballarat Netball Association 15/U Development Squad. They competed in the annual Ballarat Junior Tournament in Bendigo and on June 2nd, the Western Zone Championships at Selkirk Stadium. Well done Lena and Casey!
Alexandra Gladman —Y7 Junior Specialist Sport
On Saturday 18th May, Alex competed in the 1st of 5 rounds of Badminton Victoria’s “Regional Classic”, hosted by Warragul Badminton Club. With 3 age group categories (Gd5-6, Y7-8 and Y9+), Alex entered the Y7-8 division in both singles and doubles. Alex won all three games of her section comfortably, so progressed to the final two matches. Unfortunately she lost her first match to a very strong (and tall!) Nathan Young from Drouin Badminton, but won the second game against Bailey Dawson, also from Drouin Badminton, to finish second in the singles and scored herself a medal for her great effort. For the doubles, Alex teamed up with Zaleah Saunders from Labertouche Badminton (Gippsland). 5 teams had entered and Alex and Zaleah only lost 1 of 4 matches, narrowly loosing to Nathan and Bailey from Drouin, 18-21. But a win in the semi finals allowed the girls a rematch in the finals against the boys. They didn’t let the opportunity get away and fought hard for a convincing 21-9 win, making them the Y 7-8 doubles champions!
Ollie Ridley—Y10 Senior Specialist Sport
Oliver won the Ballarat Cricket Association U15 1st XI bowling aggregate for season 2023/2024. Ollie finished with 16 wickets in the U15 1st XI, and 33 wickets for the Wendouree Cricket Club when combining his senior matches. Ollie also represented Ballarat in the U/15 JCW - J.D.H McKenzie Cup. Everyone is extremely proud of Ollie's efforts this season. He worked very hard on his leg spin bowling and to take the highest amount of wickets as a leg spin bowler, was a tremendous achievement!
Everyone in the Sports department at BHS are proud to see the outstanding results these students have achieved. We continue to look forward to our Specialist Sport Students demonstrating school values and seeing many more of their highlights this year and for years to come.
Well done everyone!
