University of Melbourne Extension Maths Competition

On Wednesday 1st  May, around 20 extension students in Y7-10 took part in the AMT Extension Maths Competition. They applied their Maths skills and knowledge to challenging and new contexts and used problem solving to extend their thinking. Well done to everyone who took part in this competition.

Problem Solving Competition

Teams from Y7 & 8 classes took part in a problem solving competition on Tuesday 21st  May. They  worked in teams of 3 or 4 to solve a range of challenging real-life problems to earn points and prizes for their group/class.

Fancy yourself a bit of a problem solver?

Below is one of their puzzles:

Tick, Tick, Tick…

Two clocks start ticking at the same time. One clock ticks every three seconds; the other clock ticks every four seconds. Ticks that occur at the same time sound to us like a single tick.

  1. How many ticks will we hear if we start the two clocks at the same time and let them run for exactly one minute?
  2. How much time will pass between the first and 14th ticks? What about between the 1st and 500th ticks?

AMT Maths Competition

The AMT Maths Competition is on in early August for all year levels. If you are interested in taking part, please speak to your Maths teacher or Ms Wemyss-Sanderson.
