From the Year 5 Classroom

Welcome to Semester 2 in Year 5! 

We are excited to begin a new semester and look forward to continuing to work together to support your child's learning and development. Semester 2 brings new opportunities for students to build on the skills and knowledge they have developed so far this year while embracing fresh challenges and experiences. Our goal is to continue providing a nurturing and engaging learning environment where every child can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Throughout the semester, students will participate in a balanced program of core learning, creative projects, and hands-on experiences designed to foster curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning. We are looking forward to another wonderful semester and appreciate your ongoing support as we work together to help every student achieve their best. 

Literature  

This semester, our Year 5 students are looking forward to exploring two engaging novels. For the first five weeks of the term, we will be reading Tom Appleby, Convict Boy by Jackie French. Set in early colonial Australia, this historical novel provides students with an insight into the lives of convicts and the challenges they faced. Through the story, students will develop their comprehension, vocabulary, and analytical skills while exploring themes of resilience, courage, and hope. Later in the semester, we will begin reading The Grandest Bookshop in the World by Amelia Mellor. This imaginative and adventure-filled novel, inspired by Melbourne's famous Cole's Book Arcade, will encourage students to think creatively as they explore rich language, fascinating characters, and historical connections. We look forward to sharing these wonderful stories and using them to inspire thoughtful discussions and a love of reading. 

Reading Diaries 

Year 5 students are encouraged to read at home for a minimum of 80 minutes per week. This is to be recorded in their school diary. Diaries are used at school throughout the week, so we ask that rather than taking diaries home, children recorded their reading each morning as part of their daily set up. Diaries will be checked by class teachers each Friday. 

Specialist Classes 

Year 5 students will continue to participate in Specialist classes on Tuesday or Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. This semester, our Year 5 students have begun learning Auslan during lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We are excited to see them develop their communication skills as they learn Australia's sign language.  

Students may wear their PE uniform on Thursdays and Fridays. 

Learning Support Officer 

Our Year 5 Learning Support Officer is Katrina Carpenter who will be working with us from Monday to Thursday.

Tuesday 28th July Pupil free day  

5L Class 

Lynne will be on leave for Term 3. 

Georgia Mullavey will teach the class on Mondays and Tuesdays, while Ainslee Flanagan will teach from Wednesday to Friday.
