Chess Tournament

In Week 10 of Term 2, Thornbury High School held its second annual Chess Tournament, where students from Year 7 to Year 12 faced off in an elimination format spanning four days. With 26 eager competitors, and reigning inaugural champion Otis Handsaker absent due to a family holiday, a new chess champion was set to be crowned. 

Day one comprised 13 simultaneous matches, with supporters packed in to watch. Despite the crowd, the room was deadly silent, you could cut the tension with a knife. All students competed in great spirit, and by day four we were down to our final four.

The semi-finals saw Yassin Shrshr (11B) take on Navin Narain (7H), and Ameen Abdulrahman (7F) face Freddie Joyce (7I), setting up an all Year 7 final between Ameen and Navin. In a closely contested match between two fierce competitors, it was Ameen who claimed the title.

A huge thank you to all participants for displaying outstanding sportsmanship throughout, and to Mr Broadby for organising the event and handcrafting the prizes. We look forward to the 2027 tournament, which promises to be even bigger and better.
