Food Studies (VPC)
Practical Learning in Action
This year, Plenty River College introduced an exciting new VPC Food Studies subject, allowing students the opportunity to develop practical life skills and greater independence.
On Fridays (9:30 am–12:30 pm), students focus on theory—covering meal planning, kitchen safety, hygiene, and the correct use of kitchen tools. Then, on Tuesdays, they bring their learning to life through hands-on cooking sessions in our supervised kitchen.
Our students also continue their walking excursions to local supermarkets, applying budgeting skills, interpreting food labels, and making thoughtful purchasing choices. Restaurant visits and other real-world experiences complement classroom learning, helping students see the connection between theory and everyday life.
Through these ongoing experiences, students are building confidence, working collaboratively, and growing in independence—all while achieving the outcomes set out in the VPC curriculum.
