Performing Arts News

Hi Tarneit Rise families,
Welcome to another exciting fortnight in Performing Arts! Students across the school have been building their skills in dance, drama, and music, while exploring the elements of music through singing, composing, and instrumental performance.
In Week 5, our Prep students wrapped up their Introduction to Dance unit. They explored moving safely in space, creating different shapes with their bodies, and following and creating simple dance patterns. It has been wonderful to see their confidence and creativity grow throughout this unit — fantastic work, Preps!
In Week 6, Preps began their Introduction to Drama. Students are exploring what makes a character, how to use their voice and facial expressions, and how to engage in pretend play and storytelling. They are also learning how to work safely and respectfully in a performance space. We are excited to see their imaginations shine!
In Week 5, Grade 1 students were introduced to the musical concepts of beat and tempo. They learned that the beat is the steady pulse in music and that tempo describes how fast or slow the music goes. Students practised clapping, moving, and singing to demonstrate different tempos.
In Week 6, students explored dynamics and rhythm. They learned that dynamics refer to loud and soft sounds, while rhythm is the pattern of long and short sounds in music. Across both weeks, students have been practising their class song, focusing on maintaining a steady beat, singing at the correct tempo, performing clear rhythms, using appropriate dynamics, and matching the pitch of the song. Their confidence is growing beautifully!
In Week 5, Grade 2 students revised their understanding of beat and tempo. They practised keeping a steady beat, identifying fast, medium, and slow tempos, and following and continuing a beat accurately.
In Week 6, students strengthened their understanding of dynamics and rhythm. They explored loud and soft contrasts and practised reading, following, and performing rhythm patterns. Like Grade 1, Grade 2 students have been refining their class song using the musical elements they have learned. It is wonderful to hear them confidently applying their knowledge in performance.
In Week 5, Grade 3 students focused on songwriting and rap. They practised their original chorus written to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, wrote rap verses to match their class theme, and explored rhythm and flow when performing their rap.
In Week 6, students added percussion instruments to enhance their class song. Working in small groups, they layered rhythms, maintained a steady beat, and rehearsed collaboratively. Fantastic teamwork has been on display!
In Week 5, Grade 4 students continued their songwriting and rap work. They practised their original chorus written to match the tune of their chosen song, created rap verses connected to their class theme, and focused on rhythm, phrasing, and performance confidence.
In Week 6, students incorporated percussion instruments to enhance their class song. Working in performance groups, they rehearsed with a focus on balance, timing, and teamwork. We are seeing strong creativity and leadership emerging within the cohort.
In Week 5, Grade 5 students learned and practised the chords A minor, F major, C major, and G major. They also developed smooth chord transitions, improved their strumming patterns, and focused on correct hand positioning and technique.
In Week 6, students began applying the elements of music more intentionally, including form and structure, dynamics, and articulation. They are thinking more deeply about how music is shaped and performed.
Grade 6 students are continuing to strengthen their ukulele skills. They are focusing on mastering strumming patterns, improving smooth transitions between A minor, F major, and C major, and playing with confidence and consistency. Their musicianship continues to develop impressively!
Clubs started last week. In Performing Arts, we have 3 different clubs running. Mr Stanley, Mrs Andrew, and Mr Kirby are running the school choir, which will continue for the whole year. Earlier in the term, students auditioned for the choir. It was a tough choice as there were so many wonderful auditions. Congratulations to the 43 students who were selected.
Mrs. Patton is running a Grade 5 & 6 Musical Club this semester, where students are learning two songs, one from Annie and one from Wicked. They will learn to sing, dance, and act to these songs, then Mrs. Patton will film them around the school to make a music video of each song to share with the classes.
Mr Max is running a Grade 3 & 4 Ukulele Club this semester. Students are learning how to hold, strum and play chords on the ukulele.
It has been wonderful to see students building their skills across dance, drama, and music. The creativity, collaboration, and confidence displayed in classes continue to grow each week.
We look forward to sharing more of our Performing Arts journey next fortnight! 🎭🎶
