French News

Bonjour, dear parents and students,
Autumn has arrived! Students have been working hard in French, developing both their oral and written language skills. With assessments approaching, it is important that students remain engaged and attentive to support their continued success in learning.
Below is a snapshot of what each year level has been focusing on during Weeks 4–5:
Prep
Prep students have been learning to count from 1–5 in French. They practise through choral repetition, individual practice, and writing the numbers spelled out.
Grade 1
Grade 1 students have been learning to count from 11–20 in French. We first reviewed numbers 1–10, then introduced 11–20 through choral repetition, individual practice, and writing the numbers in words.
Grade 2
Grade 2 students have been learning the days of the week in French through the classic story The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Using an engaging story helps students make connections and strengthens recall of new vocabulary.
Grade 3
Grade 3 students have been learning the possessive adjective “my” to introduce family members, differentiating between mon (masculine), ma (feminine), and mes (plural). They have also begun learning how to tell the date, starting with a review of the days of the week and then moving on to the months of the year.
Grade 4
Grade 4 students learned how to tell the time using the 24-hour clock by the hour last week. This week, they are extending this knowledge to include the half-hour and minutes. They have also begun learning how to extract information and form sentences related to different school subjects.
Grades 5 and 6
Grade 5 and 6 students have been learning how to ask for and give directions in French. This includes using correct prepositions (e.g. “around,” “to the right”) and understanding how to give directions from one point to another. They have also begun describing family members in French, using the correct adjective agreement for masculine, feminine, and plural forms.
