Grade 5 Community News

Hello Year 5 families!!!
Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended Meet and Greet this week. It was lovely to meet the grown-ups of our wonderful year 5 students and begin the important school/home relationship that is so integral to our students' learning.
English
We are continuing to read and unpack the author’s purpose and themes of Kensuke’s Kingdom. While writing, we are creating a persuasive text about deforestation. Students are focusing on adding emotive language and high modality words to their arguments to persuade the reader.
Mathematics
In Year 5 Mathematics, we are wrapping up our unit on factors, where students have been developing a strong understanding of factor pairs, common factors, and how factors relate to multiplication and division. This foundation work has strengthened their number sense and ability to solve more complex problems efficiently.
As we move forward, we are beginning our focus on multiplication and division strategies, applying our knowledge of factors to solve multi-step problems, worded questions, and real-world scenarios. Students will continue building fluency, accuracy, and confidence with larger numbers and written methods.
We are also beginning to prepare for NAPLAN in March. Our preparation will focus on reinforcing key skills, practising problem-solving strategies, and building student confidence in approaching a variety of question types. We are proud of the progress students are making and look forward to seeing their continued growth.
Harmony Day
On March 20th, 2026, Tarneit Rise will celebrate Harmony Day. A special day that recognises the many cultures, backgrounds, and traditions that make our school community so vibrant. Harmony Day teaches students that everyone belongs and deserves to feel safe, valued, and respected. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to dress up in their cultural attire and celebrate what makes each of us unique!
