HIGHLIGHTS OF TERM 3

Student Games Take Centre Stage

Our students have been putting their creativity, problem-solving and digital skills into action by designing and developing their very own games!

To give students an authentic audience for their work, a new Student Games Arcade has been created where students can submit the games they have developed. Once approved, their games become available for others to play and enjoy through the arcade.

A selection of teacher-created games has also been added to showcase what is possible shared beyond the classroom and enjoyed by a real audience. It also means their creations can continue to be accessed and played long after the learning unit has finished.

We thank Shane Edge for his work in developing this initiative and creating an exciting opportunity for our students to showcase their creativity and skills. We look forward to seeing the arcade continue to grow as more student games are added and help build the initial game library while students continue developing and submitting their own creations.

More than just a place to play, the arcade gives students an opportunity to see their work

SCIENCE UPDATE

Term 3 was an exciting time for science as we celebrated National Science Week across both campuses! This year’s theme, “Seeds of Science,” encouraged students to explore their curiosity, creativity and passion for science.

Our students enthusiastically embraced a variety of fun and engaging activities throughout the week. These included planting seeds, designing and testing seed helicopters to see which could travel the greatest distance, taking part in daily Kahoot challenges, entering a creative writing competition, and sending special “shout-outs” to people who have helped them grow and encouraged their learning.

A huge congratulations to Preston Marsters (7E) for creating the best-designed seed helicopter in our Seed Helicopter Challenge. We were impressed by the creativity and ingenuity shown by all students who participated!

Our creative writing competition was also a fantastic success, with so many imaginative and thoughtful entries that choosing a single winner proved almost impossible. The brief students were given was to write a short story using the prompt, “ A world without seeds”. Congratulations to our joint winners, Gurnoor Mehra (9G), Sahasra Gudala (8I) and Rabia Irfan (7D).p

Below is a snippet of their work:

Gurnoor

Sahasra

Rabia

Imagine you were the goddess of agriculture and harvest, and you had the job to make new plants every day. When one dies, make a plant out of your hand and put it in its place. There should be a better way to do it, but there isn’t. If I stop, then the whole world will suffer terribly.

I should introduce myself. I am Demeter, goddess of agriculture and harvest. Since I haven’t figured out a way to make a plant grow by itself, I am the one who grows the plants on my hand and it’s the exact duplicate of the one that died.

I have figured out a plan though. The first step is I have to make a seed; I’ll plant them everywhere………

No one remembered the exact moments when they vanished. Some blamed a mutation in global pollinators; others suggested a fungal blight that travelled faster than humans could track. Either way, by the time I was born, the world began the Era of Hollow Soil.

My grandmother used to recall stories of the old world, where rows of wheat swayed in the wind like a sea of gold, where supermarkets boasted colourful fruit under the sharp fluorescent lights, where life flourished under the chameleon sky. Back then, life started quietly inside these tiny shells called 'seeds', without them, everything changed……

The sky glows as the sun rises upward. The planted seeds get ready to grow into what they desire to be. They rise higher, and higher from the dirt. Their roots grow into their starting point.

but as they are about to rise, instead of being a small plant, nothing comes out of the ground. A farmer walks over to check his seeds, he looks disappointed as the other seeds in the ground begin to scream loud but quiet words, no one seems to hear them.

It was as though they didn’t exist.

The seeds kept trying to grow their roots even more, nothing…..

Thank you to all of our students for getting involved, having fun and celebrating the wonder of science. It was fantastic to see so much curiosity, creativity and scientific thinking throughout National Science Week!

In their final term of Chemistry, our Year 12 students had the wonderful opportunity to visit Ecolinc, where they spent a full day engaging in hands-on scientific activities and using specialist equipment, including High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and an IR spectrophotometer.

The experience provided students with a valuable opportunity to apply their classroom learning in a real-world scientific setting. It was fantastic to see students enjoying the practical activities, working collaboratively with their peers and experiencing science in a different environment.

It has been an incredibly busy and intense term for our Year 12 students as they have worked hard to complete their SACs and prepare for their final assessments. The Science team would like to acknowledge and congratulate them on their perseverance, commitment and hard work throughout the year.

We wish all of our Year 12 students the very best as they enter their final weeks of Term 4. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and wish them every success for the remainder of their VCE journey!

Year 7 English: The Power of Creative and Persuasive Language

This term, our Year 7 English students have explored the power of language in both creative and persuasive contexts. Students have experimented with concrete poetry, considering how the visual arrangement of words can contribute to meaning. They then explored slam poetry, developing their understanding of voice, rhythm, imagery and performance while crafting poetry designed to engage an audience. Our students also investigated ekphrastic poetry, which is poetry that uses artworks as inspiration for writing. Through this work, they considered how writers can respond to visual texts and transform what they see into language, ideas and emotions.

Alongside their creative work, students have been developing their skills in analysing arguments. They have examined how authors use language, evidence and persuasive techniques to influence an audience, building the foundations for thoughtful and critical engagement with the ideas they encounter in the world around them.

It has been wonderful to see our Year 7 students move between reading, thinking, writing and performing, developing both their creativity and their confidence as communicators. Well done, Year 7s!

Year 8 English: Poetry and Persuasion!

Our Year 8 English students have also explored the power of poetry and persuasive language, but this time, through an analytical lens.

Students studied a range of poetry by Indigenous Australian writers, developing their understanding of how poets use language, imagery, perspective and poetic techniques to communicate ideas about Country, culture, identity, history and connection. Through close analysis, students have considered how poetry can give voice to experiences and perspectives and invite readers to see the world in new ways.

Students have also strengthened their skills in analysing arguments, examining how writers construct viewpoints and use language, evidence and persuasive techniques to influence their audiences. They have practised identifying an author's key ideas and considering how effectively different choices position readers.

Across the term, students have continued to build their skills as thoughtful readers, analytical thinkers and confident communicators, engaging critically with both literary and non-literary texts. We are so proud of our students.

Year 9 English: A deep dive into constructing argument

This term, our Year 9 English students have been developing their skills in analysing and constructing arguments.

Students have examined a range of persuasive texts, exploring how authors use language, evidence, reasoning and persuasive techniques to influence their audiences. They have considered how arguments are shaped by purpose, audience and context, developing their ability to read critically and identify the choices writers make.

Students have then put these skills into practice through the creation and delivery of persuasive speeches. They have developed their own viewpoints, selected and organised evidence, crafted persuasive language and considered how voice, delivery and presentation can strengthen an argument.

It has been fantastic to see students developing greater confidence in expressing their ideas and engaging thoughtfully with issues that matter to them!

SENIOR

Year 10 English: Speaking Up and Analysing Justice in Australia

This term, our Year 10 English students have been exploring how language can be used to persuade audiences and readers.

Students began the term by developing and delivering their own Point of View presentations. They selected contemporary issues that mattered to them, researched different perspectives, developed clear contentions and carefully considered how evidence, language and delivery could be used to persuade an audience. It was fantastic to see students standing in front of their peers and testing their developing skills to engage and connect with their audience.

Students then turned from constructing arguments to analysing them through our Justice in Australia unit. They investigated contemporary debates about racism in Australia, youth crime and bail laws, examining how writers and speakers construct arguments and use language, evidence, tone and persuasive techniques to position their audiences.

Our Year 10s are now beginning their final English unit for the year, an analytical study of Angie Thomas's celebrated novel The Hate U Give. Students will explore ideas about family and community, racism, justice and the power of speaking up while developing their skills in close reading and analytical writing. We look forward to seeing Year 10 bring together the reading, thinking and writing skills they have developed throughout the year!

Year 11 English: Exploring Arguments and High Ground

Our Year 11 VCE English students have been putting persuasion under the microscope this term, examining not only what people argue, but how arguments and language work together to influence an audience.

As part of VCE English Unit 2's Exploring Argument area of study, students investigated the contemporary debate surrounding the use of AI-generated actors in film and media. They examined different viewpoints and analysed how writers construct arguments, select evidence and make language choices designed to position their audiences. Students also developed their own persuasive voices, researching contemporary issues and constructing and delivering Point of View presentations.

Our students are now beginning their study of the Australian film High Ground. Through close viewing and discussion, they will explore how the film constructs meaning through character, setting, dialogue, imagery and cinematic techniques, while engaging with its representation of history, power, violence, culture, Country and colonialism. Students will finish the unit by putting together analytical response that should communicate their interpretation of the film in sophisticated analytical writing.

Year 12 English: Finding a Voice – From Persuasion to Langston Hughes

It has been a busy and important term for our Year 12 English students as they complete their final areas of study and turn their attention towards the VCE English examination.

Students began Unit 4 by exploring the power of argument and persuasion. They investigated contemporary issues, researched different perspectives and developed their own Point of View presentations, considering how argument, language, evidence, voice and delivery can be shaped for a particular audience and purpose. They then turned their attention to analysing the arguments of others, examining how writers and speakers use argument and language to position audiences.

Most recently, students have immersed themselves in the poetry of Langston Hughes. Through close reading of poems including I, Too, Democracy and Afro-American Fragments, students have explored Hughes's powerful representations of race, freedom, belonging, inequality and the struggle for change. They have considered not simply what Hughes says, but how poetic language, structure, voice and imagery create meaning and invite readers to engage with the ideas and values at the heart of his work.

With their final SACs completed, our Year 12 students now move into examination preparation, bringing together the reading, writing, analytical and creative skills they have developed throughout VCE English. We are all enormously proud of the work they have put in and look forward to supporting them through this final stage of their English journey.

Year 12 Exam, Revision, and Website resources

With the Year 12 English examination approaching on Tuesday 27 October, our focus now turns to helping every student revise purposefully, practise effectively and walk into the exam knowing what to expect.

The English team has developed a Year 12 English Exam and Revision Study Guide that takes students step-by-step through the road to the examination. Rather than simply telling students to “study”, the guide explains how to revise English: how to break revision into manageable tasks, practise responding to prompts and stimulus material, strengthen analytical writing, build vocabulary and use timed practice effectively.

Students also have access to our dedicated Year 12 English Exam and Revision website, bringing together resources for all three sections of the examination in one place. Students can revisit studied texts and key ideas, practise analytical responses, work with Creating Texts stimulus material, strengthen their argument analysis skills and access exam advice and practice materials.

A feature of the website is our collection of Interactive Study Tools. These give students opportunities to actively practise rather than simply reread notes. Students can work on unpacking prompts, responding to stimulus material, generating ideas, strengthening vocabulary and rehearsing the kinds of thinking they will need to do independently in the examination.

The VCE English examination contributes 50% of the final study score, making consistent preparation particularly valuable. Our message to students is simple: effective revision does not need to mean studying for hours at a time. Regular, focused practice—one prompt, one paragraph, one planning exercise or one vocabulary drill at a time—can make a significant difference.

We encourage our Year 12 students to make full use of these resources over the coming weeks and congratulate them on reaching this exciting final stage of their VCE English studies.

EVENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Writer in Residence Program: The Bemin Legacy Project Bringing Writing to Life!

This term, some Year 9 and 10 students (the ‘Bemin Legacy Committee’) continued to have the exciting opportunity to work with award-winning Writer in Residence Maxine Beneba Clarke, enhancing their professional writing, poetry and creative expression as they worked on a school-wide collaborative writing project.

Students explored the craft of writing through workshops and conversations about voice, identity, imagery and storytelling, gaining insight into the ways professional writers develop and shape their ideas.

Then, students collected and collated words, phrases and writing submissions from students and staff across the college to include in an anthology of writing pieces and an artwork that will capture a sense of who we are at this point in our ‘Bemin journey.’

This program, although not finished yet, has provided a wonderful opportunity for students to see writing not simply as something they do at school, but as a creative practice with the power to tell stories, challenge perspectives and express who they are.

We look forward to seeing how our students continue to develop their voices as writers throughout the year, and to see what comes of our final project. Well done, Bemin Legacy Committee!

Health Update

Another big term in Health! Across every year level, students have been building the knowledge and skills that underpin respectful relationships from understanding their changing bodies through to navigating consent and communication with confidence.

Year 7 Health Students worked through the physical and emotional changes of adolescence, separating fact from myth and developed practical strategies for managing those changes. They then turned to what makes a relationship positive with friends, family and peers and identified the qualities of healthy connections and the warning signs of unhealthy ones. A mature, open approach from a cohort only just starting secondary school.

Year 8 HealthThe Year 8 cohort has built on that foundation with a deeper look at positive relationships. Alongside revisiting puberty and body changes, students explored sexual health including how sexually transmitted infections are transmitted and prevented and unpacked consent what it actually means, what it looks like in practice, and why it can never be assumed. Students also mapped out the trusted adults and services they can turn to for accurate information and support.

Year 9 HealthYear 9 students have shown real maturity examining healthy relationships. They analysed the characteristics of respectful relationships across different contexts, considered how power, pressure and expectations can play out, and worked through realistic scenarios to practise communicating boundaries. Knowing how to recognise when a relationship isn't healthy and what to do about it has been a key focus.

Year 10 HealthOur Year10s have taken on the most complex content in the program: respectful relationships in full. Students examined consent in depth, including the legal framework and the difference between consent that is freely given and consent that is pressured. They also extended their sexual health knowledge, covering STIs, contraception and safer sex practices. Throughout, students have been building health literacy, researching credible services and learning how to seek help for themselves or a friend.

Year 11 HHD It's been a big term for our Unit 2 students. In Area of Study 1, they explored developmental transitions across the lifespan: the physical, social, emotional and intellectual changes from youth to adulthood, the realities of becoming a parent, prenatal development and early childhood, and how early life experiences shape health across generations. All of this culminated in their Area of Study 1 SAC, which students approached with genuine preparation and focus.

The class has since moved into Area of Study 2, turning their attention to the Australian health system- how it works, who it serves, and what it means to be a health-literate consumer.

Year 12 HHDOur Year 12s have gone global! In Unit 4, Area of Study 1, students compared health status and human development between Australia and low- and middle-income countries, and examined the factors driving those differences. They analysed sustainability, discrimination, and the health implications of global trends including tourism and the worldwide marketing of ultra-processed foods, before successfully completing their Area of Study 1 SAC.

They've now launched into Area of Study 2 and the Sustainable Development Goals, examining how SDG 3 connects to goals on poverty, hunger, education, gender equality, clean water and responsible consumption. Weekly hurdle tasks are keeping the momentum up as we head towards the final SAC and exam revision.

Vocational Major

It has been an exciting few weeks for our Year 12 VCE Vocational Major (VM) students, who have had the opportunity to showcase their learning, creativity, leadership and workplace skills through two significant events: the VCE VM Work Related Skills (WRS) and Literacy Presentation Day and the Personal Development Skills (PDS) Youth Festival at the Junior Campus.

VCE VM WRS and Literacy Presentation Day

On Thursday 10th September, Year 12 VCE VM students participated in their WRS and Literacy Presentation Day, an opportunity for students to demonstrate the accumulation of their learning to a panel of classroom teachers and College leadership.

Students presented their Literacy oral presentations on a range of contemporary workplace and community issues, sharing information, perspectives and persuasive arguments with their audience. Topics explored included workplace mental health, artificial intelligence, apprenticeships, first aid, PPE, young workers and other issues relevant to students’ future pathways.

Students also presented their Work Related Skills (WRS) portfolios, discussing their career aspirations, qualifications, workplace experiences, skills and plans for life after Bemin Secondary College. The presentations provided an important opportunity for students to reflect on their individual growth and consider how their experiences at school, in the workplace and through VCE VM have prepared them for their next steps.

The day was a significant milestone for our Year 12 VCE VM students and a wonderful opportunity to see their confidence and independence develop. We are incredibly proud of the effort, preparation and commitment they demonstrated throughout the day.

PDS Youth Festival at the Junior Campus.

Our Year 12 PDS students also put their learning into action by planning and delivering a Youth Festival for Year 7 students at the Junior Campus.

Working collaboratively in groups, students designed and facilitated a range of activities for the Year 7 students. Throughout the day, students developed and demonstrated their leadership, communication, organisation and teamwork skills. They took responsibility for different roles, worked with younger students and adapted their activities to ensure everyone could participate and enjoy the experience.

Alongside the activity sessions, students organised a sausage sizzle and Otai drink sale, raising $285, which was donated to Foodbank. Students also organised a Bake Sale Fundraiser, raising a further $532.50 for The Jenny Souris Foundation.

The fundraising component provided another authentic opportunity for students to practise organisation, communication, teamwork and event management skills in a real-world context, while contributing to causes that support the wider community.

The Youth Festival was a fantastic example of the VCE VM philosophy of learning through doing. Students were able to take the skills developed in the classroom and apply them to a genuine event, working together to create a positive experience for the Junior Campus community.

A huge thank you goes to the staff who supported both events and to our students for their enthusiasm, hard work and willingness to step outside their comfort zones. These experiences highlight the many ways our VCE VM students are developing the practical, personal and workplace skills they will carry with them into their future pathways. We look forward to seeing what they achieve next and wish them the very best of luck in their future endeavours.
