First Nations On Country 

On Monday 31 August, SMC's First Nations students from Year 1 to Year 10 took the bus to Midway Point for a morning of painting and yarning together.

As part of our 'Island Life' theme this year, Sharnie took us on a short walk to a nearby spot where ochre deposits can be found along the water's edge. There, Laycie and Ruby told us the story of Ballawinnie (Ochre) and how it came to be across Lutruwita/Tasmania. 

We spent time on the beach collecting and grinding the ochre to make paint. Each student then painted the 'Ya Pulingina' letters which will be displayed at the Brisbane Street entrance of the College when completed, welcoming all to SMC in Palawa Kani. 

After this, we drove up to Flyway Park for a BBQ lunch and play at the park. It was Sharnie's birthday, so we finished the day by celebrating with cupcakes and cake.
