Stepping back in time: Certificate II Tourism class explores historic Richmond

Last week, our Certificate II in Tourism students traded their classroom for the picturesque streets of Richmond, spending a wonderful day experiencing local travel through the eyes of a tourist. 

With a focus on Tasmania's rich heritage and vibrant small business scene, the jam-packed itinerary gave the cohort a practical look into Tasmania's regional tourism. 

The group began their day by exploring Richmond's most iconic historic landmarks. They walked across the famous Richmond Bridge, uncovered dark local history at the Old Richmond Gaol and discovered what early village life was like through the displays at the Old Model Town. 

No visit to the township is complete without sampling the culinary goods, so the students dropped into the Richmond Bakery and Sweets and Treats to taste local flavours. 

They also immersed themselves in the regional arts and retail sector with visits to the Peppercorn Art Gallery alongside Richmond Botanicals and the nearby lavender shop to see the latest handcrafted goods from local artisans. 

Amid the busy schedule, the class took time to unwind and take in the scenic views at the local park. 

For many students, the warm hospitality at each venue made the excursion a real highlight. With so many staff being long-term locals, they were able to share valuable inside knowledge about Richmond's history and tourism operations, giving our future industry professionals an engaging, hands-on glimpse into Tasmanian tourism in action.
