Prep J – A Fantastic Start to Term 3!
Well done to all our Prep J students on a wonderful start to Term 3! It is incredible to see just how much everyone has grown since beginning school earlier this year. The confidence, independence and learning growth on display each day has been fantastic. One of our biggest milestones this term is that the students now officially know all the letters of the alphabet—what an amazing achievement! We are so proud of how far they have come.
Reading
Our first mentor text for the term was What Do You Call Your Grandma? Through this story, we explored how readers make connections between books and their own lives. We discussed text-to-self connections by sharing experiences about our own families, as well as text-to-text connections by thinking about how this story reminded us of other books we have read together. We also learnt some new vocabulary and discovered what a family tree is and how it helps us understand our family relationships.
Writing
B-E-C-A-U-S-E... we can spell "because!" Our writing focus has been on extending simple sentences by adding a reason using the word because. Students have been using picture prompts to help generate their ideas before creating complete sentences. It has been wonderful to see them becoming more confident writers by explaining their thinking in greater detail.
Mathematics
Our introduction to teen numbers has been full of excitement and many "light bulb" moments! Through a variety of hands-on activities and manipulatives, students have been exploring how teen numbers are made up of one ten and some more ones. We have been using the language of "10 and ___ more" to build a strong understanding of place value, which will support future mathematical learning.
Classroom Expectations
As we begin a new term, we have spent time revisiting our classroom expectations. Taking the opportunity to refresh these routines helps everyone to be the best learners they can be, maintain a positive attitude towards learning, and ensure we continue to make safe and respectful choices throughout the school. Consistently revisiting these expectations helps create a happy, supportive and successful learning environment for everyone.
Please take a moment to look through Prep J's Classroom Expectations Matrix attached below and chat with your child about how they can continue demonstrating these behaviours both in the classroom and around our school.
