Literacy

Junior Years Reading Program
At LSC, reading is a key focus of learning. All our teachers are practitioners of literacy, ensuring that students develop the reading and writing skills necessary for academic success in a range of different subject areas and learning contexts.
One of the ways we foster these skills is through the Junior Reading Program, which provides dedicated time for independent reading within the English curriculum. This initiative supplements reading done at home and strengthens students’ comprehension skills.
How We Support Reading in the Classroom
Our English teachers:
✅ Provide 15 minutes at the beginning of each English lesson, for Junior Years students to engage in independent reading.
✅Regularly monitor student progress in reading comprehension through conferences and diagnostic assessments in line with the LSC assessment schedule.
✅ Actively guide students’ reading development through modeling and the application of comprehension strategies during lessons.
✅ Schedule regular library sessions to help students engage with available resources and foster a school-wide reading culture.
BOOST
Introducing BOOST, LSC’s literacy intervention program designed to help nominated Year 7 and 8 students strengthen their reading and writing skills. BOOST provides targeted support through small group sessions to help students improve their literacy abilities, building both confidence and competence.
The program uses high-quality resources from Fountas & Pinnell, a literacy framework that guides students through a structured sequence of lessons. With a focus on practical strategies and hands-on learning, lessons blend engaging activities and a supportive learning environment to ensure that each student can progress at their own pace and reach their full potential in literacy.
Progress is regularly monitored through assessments and observations, allowing teachers to tailor instruction to meet each student’s needs. Students are appropriately challenged according to their skill level, using leveled books and activities designed to promote growth.
Our BOOST teachers are currently undertaking assessment of identified Year 7 students, with lessons commencing in late Term 1. Feel free to contact the program coordinator, Ms. Dower, or your child’s English teacher for more details on how BOOST can support learning and growth.
