Picasso Portraits and Henri Matisse's Colour cutouts

Students have been studying the Artwork of famous Artists who changed the direction of modern Art: Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Modigliani, and Henri Mattisse.

Examples of these Artists Artwork, have inspired our young Artists to think about making portraits and artworks in Art that use distortion,  different formats, strong lines, bold colours, and varied viewpoints. Students have learnt how to present their artwork in contrasting colours and collage to create visual impact.

Senior students have focused on the unique work of Pablo Picasso and his portraits. They have drawn profile and front view portraits of themselves or their friends and then transposed these into Picasso style  of ‘Distorted perspectives and viewpoints” . Looking at other modern portrait artists for inspiration too, the terms of Realism, Abstraction, Semi Abstract and Semi Realism, Photo realism and Classical or Traditional Portraiture have been discussed, in lesson times.

Grade One and Two have had a particular focus on the work of Henri Mattise and his bold and colourful paper cutouts/collage and painting. They have looked at the terms related to shape of irregular and naturalistic shapes. As a contrast, the Geometric and Colourful work of Paul Klee has been explored where shapes are regular, geometric , architectural, and bold in designs in vibrant colours.

As a contrast to these two great colourists: Matisse and Klee, students have also learnt about work with Black and White alone, in contrast, in pattern work and in graphic designs.

Look out Design world, we have up and coming Graphic designers in our midst!

Along our journey of discovering more about famous artists we have learnt about the worlds that Artists lived in while they painted and created, how they gave to their communities, how they worked on a day to day basis in their studios and what these great creatives inspired them to continue to create, break new artistic boundaries and be at the forerunner of new styles in Art. It is exciting to see how enthusiastically our BPS students embrace learning about Artworks and Art styles from around the world.
