Grade 3 & 4
Term 2, Week 10
Dear Year 3/4 Families,
We have made it to the end of Term 2 in Years 3 and 4! It has certainly been a big term and a very busy finish. Our wonderful students have shown resilience, commitment and a positive attitude throughout the term. A highlight for our Year 4 students was attending Anglesea Discovery Camp, where they challenged themselves, stepped outside their comfort zones, and demonstrated excellent teamwork, cooperation and perseverance. We are incredibly proud of the way all students have embraced new learning experiences and opportunities this term.
In Reader’s Workshop this term, our focus has been on making connections, questioning, vocabulary development, synthesising, and identifying the main idea and supporting details within texts. Students explored how to locate the main idea and identify details that support it. They used Venn diagrams to compare and contrast similar texts and topics, helping them to recognise similarities and differences. We also revised making text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections using sticky notes, and continued developing our Reader’s Responses to our iPick texts. Throughout the term, students explored a range of non-fiction texts about celebrations and religions from around the world, building their understanding of different cultures and traditions.
In Writing, we are wrapping up our writing on Information Reports. This term we have learnt lots about writing information reports. For example; how to search and collect relevant information on the iPad, form sentences from dot points, how to include more detail in our writing, and how to segment our writing into paragraphs.
In Maths, we have been building our understanding of how numbers work through additive and multiplicative thinking. Students have explored a range of mental and written strategies for solving addition and multiplication problems, including jump strategies and split strategies. We have also begun learning about fractions, focusing on how they represent equal parts of a whole and comparing and identifying different fractions. In addition, students have investigated probability by describing the likelihood of events occurring and using mathematical language such as certain, likely, unlikely, and impossible. By practising different approaches, students are developing confidence in choosing efficient methods to solve increasingly complex problems.
In Inquiry, we continued to investigate CELEBRATIONS around the world. We have been working hard on our selected celebration for our group project by recording our findings and sources.
We hope you all have a wonderful and restful holiday and look forward to seeing you all back for an action-packed Term 3!
