Year Six
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been another busy and exciting few weeks for our Year 6 students! Alongside their learning in Writing, Maths, Reading and Exhibition, students have enjoyed Book Week and our final book parade, the Father’s Day Stall, Wakkakiri and Tournament of Minds. We have also been busy preparing for Year 6 Camp next week, which we are all looking forward to! Here is a look at some of the learning and experiences from the past few weeks.
Writing
In Writing, Year 6 students have been learning more about information texts and the different ways we can share information, including newspapers, online books, presentations and websites. Students have been researching questions about how humans impact biodiversity using websites such as WWF, National Geographic Kids, UNICEF and Conservation Australia. They have started planning and writing their own information reports, focusing on using clear paragraphs, subheadings, topic sentences and topic-specific vocabulary.
Maths
In Maths, Year 6 students have been learning about fractions, decimals and percentages and how they can represent the same amount. They have been practising how to compare and order them and use them to solve different problems. Students have also explored money and budgeting, looking at real-life examples such as discounts, sales and planning what they can buy with a set amount of money. These activities have helped students build their problem-solving, reasoning and perseverance skills.
Exhibition
In Exhibition, students have started researching their lines of inquiry and learning more about their central ideas. They have been working on their research skills, including finding reliable websites and useful information to answer their questions.
Students have also had the opportunity to work with teacher and parent mentors, who have shared their knowledge and experience in different areas to help students deepen their understanding and learn more about their chosen inquiry. Students are now beginning to organise their research into informative research boards. Over the next few sessions, they will work with their groups to plan and design their boards ready to share their learning as part of their Exhibition.
Reading
In Reading, Year 6 students have been enjoying the Book Week theme, “Symphony of Stories,” and talking about how books and stories can make us think, feel and see things differently. Students explored books including The Little Refugee and Emo the Emu, discussing the characters, themes and ideas within each story. They also learned about text innovations and how writers can take ideas from an existing story and use them to create something new.
Book Week Parade
To finish off Book Week, Year 6 students had their final book parade, proudly marching around the basketball court in their fabulous and creative costumes. It was a wonderful way to celebrate our love of books and reading!
Iron Armour
Through the Iron Armour program, Year 6 students have been learning about the importance of having a positive attitude and strong motivation. Students have explored how their attitude can affect their outcomes and how understanding their “why” can help them stay focused and keep going when things get challenging. Students have reflected on their own goals and what motivates them to become the best version of themselves.
Shout Out!
A special shout out to the Year 6s who competed in the Tournament of Minds competition and were awarded Honours for their presentation. This is awarded to teams who finish as runners-up and achieve scores very close to the first-place winners. We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 team: Maha, Vivaan, Rinad, Lulu, Ronil, Vamika and Tanya and Miss. Pietrapertosa for this incredible achievement.
A special shout-out also goes to the students who competed in Wakakirri. We are incredibly proud of the effort, teamwork and dedication they showed throughout the experience!
Reminders
Students are required to bring a fully charged device to school each day.
