Welcome

What an exciting fortnight for the Year 4 Students with Book Week, Science Week, Basketball Clinic and the Father's Day stall! As we enter the last few weeks of term, it is encouraging to see spirits and engagement still at a high. Students continue to display and embody the Learner Profile attributes and be life long learners, applying themselves to social and academic situations with positivity and growth mindsets.

Wakkakiri

Congratulations to the Year 4 students who have devoted their time, energy and creativity to this years Wakkakiri performance. Your efforts and commitment have not gone unnoticed, winning the following awards:

Storytelling Award for Theme and Concept
Ensemble Award for Choreography
Ensemble Award for Group Dance
Production Award for Projection
Lead Cast Award for Performance in Dancing and Acting

These outstanding achievements have secured the Wakkakiri performers a place in the State Finals in September!!

Thank you to all the teachers and families who have supported the students.

Chess

Congratulations to Sanjay and Sanjit in 4A who placed first and runner up respectively in the Saltwater Chess Competition for the Year 4 category. A huge shout out to Sanjay who also took out the trophy as the overall winner of the competition conquering students from Years 4 -9 to claim the top prize! Well done to both students for displaying excellent sportsmanship.

Reading

Book Week did not disappoint this year with Year 4's taking part in a variety of activities. From creative bookmark making, shared reading with a peer, Reader's Theatre, Book Club discussions, designing new book covers for favourite books, door and wall displays, just chilling with a book and pillow and of course the big finale - the 2026 Book Week Parade! The effort and enthusiasm put into each ensemble was outstanding as students strutted around sharing their favourite books as a costume during the parade. It was great to see students engaging with texts in various ways, including mixing it up in the classroom and even outdoors!

Writing

To compliment the authors and texts the students have been reading, each class put their writing skills to the test and developed a series of text innovations. Students used their knowledge from the last few weeks' lessons on different leads, descriptive and sensory writing, figurative language, adding verbs and adjectives, to enhance their writing and the reader's engagement. They worked through the writing process, developing an idea, planning the sequence, drafting, revising, editing, conferencing and then becoming publishers and illustrators. We encourage you to read them on Google Classroom to celebrate Book Week or pop into your child's classroom and flick through a copy!

Mathematics

Students have been refining their multiplication and division skills using various strategies to create fact families, short and long division, place value division and solve an increasing complex series of number and worded problems. Working in pairs, small groups and individually, students have supported each other to develop their knowledge and confidence to tackle real world multiplication and division problems.

Inquiry

To conclude this unit of inquiry into "Exploration reshapes civilisations and influences perspective" the Year 4's researched an explorer and documented their 'discoveries' and what impacts, positive and/or negative, they had on civilisations and the environment. They looked at various perspectives to gain a better overall view of the explorer and the decisions that were made along the way. They shared their learning in different ways from posters, diary entries to sharing circles, practising their communication, social and listening and speaking skills.

Science Week

The students were wowed at assembly where the secondary teachers demonstrated some exciting and mind bending magic - or was it science???

Pencils punched holes in a bag of water - but did not leak!
Upturned glass of water did not spill and only blocked by a piece of card - like what?
Towers of smoke and fire coming out of a bottle and many more.

Year 4 students will be taking part in some science activities next week in their classrooms to celebrate the magic of science.

Basketball Clinic

A handful of girls and boys from Year 4 were selected to take part in a basketball clinic run by teachers and students from Year 9. The students had the opportunity to develop skills and challenged themselves to perform complex drills to sharpen their focus and game enjoyment. Well Done to all who participated!
