Year Three
Reading
Our Year 3 students have been strengthening their comprehension skills through the text Kamishibai Man by Allen Say, focusing on predicting, inferring and summarising. They have been making predictions using clues from the text and their prior knowledge, while developing their ability to make inferences by combining text evidence with what they already know. Students have also been practising how to identify the key ideas and important information in the text so they can create concise and meaningful summaries. Through these reading strategies, our students are becoming more thoughtful, confident and independent readers.
Writing
Our Year 3 students have been developing their writing skills through text innovation, using familiar mentor texts as inspiration to create their own imaginative versions. They have been making deliberate choices about characters, settings and events while experimenting with interesting leads, descriptive language, rich vocabulary and language devices. Students have also been developing their ability to “show, not tell” by describing characters’ feelings, actions and experiences in engaging ways. They have been rereading, editing and refining their writing to make their texts more engaging for their audience.
Inquiry
Our Year 3 students have been taking action in their Inquiry learning by creating a personal artefact box that represents memories, experiences and connections that are meaningful to them. Students have been selecting objects, photographs, drawings or other artefacts and exploring the stories and memories behind them. They have been thinking about how these artefacts connect to their past and shape who they are today. Students are now preparing their projects to share during our upcoming Gallery Walk, where they will have the opportunity to share their stories, celebrate their connections and learn about the experiences of their
classmates.
Numeracy
Our Year 3 students have been building their understanding of multiplication and division through hands-on learning experiences. They have been using a range of mathematical manipulatives, such as counters and arrays, to represent equal groups, sharing and grouping situations. Students have been making connections between multiplication and division and using these representations to support their mathematical thinking. They have also been applying their strategies to real-life word problems, using the RUCSAC strategy to help them read, understand, solve and check their answers. Students have been encouraged to explain their strategies and justify their mathematical thinking.
Book Week Parade
This year’s Book Week theme was Symphony of Stories. Throughout the week, school leaders and teachers shared their favourite books during special read-aloud sessions in the library, while students created their own text innovations inspired by familiar stories.
On Friday morning, we held our Grade 3 Book Week parade. Students and staff went to great lengths to dress as their favourite book characters and proudly share them with the school community. The parade was a wonderful celebration of books, stories and creativity—and was thoroughly enjoyed by all!
