EXPLORING FOOD CITIZENSHIP IN ACTION

This term, our year 12 students have been investigating important food issues, including food security, food sovereignty in Australia, and the role we can all play as responsible and active food citizens.

As part of their learning, we were fortunate to welcome Pat and Sue from the Longwarry Foodbank and Eat Up. They shared valuable insights into the incredible work their volunteers do to support local communities and schools. Every fortnight, the dedicated team prepares an impressive 670 sandwiches for school students, and our class was excited to lend a hand by helping make some of those sandwiches.

Pat and Sue also introduced students to the community lunch program, which is held every second week. They brought along a selection of ingredients commonly used in meals provided to community members. Students learned that the Foodbank, community lunches, and sandwich-making programs are all driven by volunteers who generously give their time to support others.

To put their learning into practice, students were challenged to create meals using the ingredients provided. During a practical lesson, they worked collaboratively to prepare both a savoury dish and a sweet treat that could potentially be served at a community lunch. This hands-on experience encouraged students to think creatively, reduce food waste, and consider how nutritious, affordable meals can be prepared for the wider community.

It was a wonderful opportunity for students to connect their classroom learning with real-world action and gain a deeper understanding of how communities can work together to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food.
