Zoo Excursion
Unit 2 Biology and Unit 2 Psychology students attended the Melbourne Zoo on Friday 12th September as part of their studies. Students spent time with one of the zoo educators looking at adaptations and survival for biology, and factors that influence the behaviour of visitors, and animals at the zoo.
Student Reflections
What I found interesting was learning about the Corroboree frog, and the Chytrid fungus which can harm these frogs. A highlight was being able to walk around with my friends and visit the keeper talks. The visit to the zoo helped me understand more about habitats and different adaptations animals have. Zoe
During the day at the zoo I found talking to the lady about how many birds are killed each year by cats interesting because the numbers were extremely high. I enjoyed seeing the biodiversity at the zoo with many different animals and each of their habitats. My favourite animals were the orangutans as they were very interesting to look at. Overall I enjoyed the whole concept of the zoo and learning about all of the different species. Shelby
I loved the zoo for psych, I liked the educational talk, the speaker, Simon, was very engaging and did a hands on activity to demonstrate the power of his type of authority and how we were more likely to conform when he instructed us to do something. Ashlea
I loved the zoo because I found it very intriguing and it was cool to see all the animals you don’t usually see in the wild. I also found the session about the corroboree frogs interesting. Will
Upon reflection I thoroughly enjoyed the zoo and I found the talk very educational. It was fun to do the data collection with the butterflies and our tour guide made it engaging and interesting. The Highlight of my day was when we were able to go around the zoo ourselves because we got to see all different kinds of animals. The animal talks were also very educational and my group went to the seal one. All in all, it was a great day and it helped me understand this section of biology a bit more. Kenzie
