Connect: Year 2

WOW! How are we already at the end of Week 6?! Only a few short weeks to go until our production at Frankston Arts Centre! Add in excursions, fundraising days and all the fun of Book Week, and it’s safe to say we have a very busy few weeks ahead of us… we think EVERYONE might be ready for a rest by the end of it!
Unfortunately, the winter weather has also brought plenty of unwanted germs our way, resulting in a higher number of absences across both our students and teachers. We want to reassure families that, while your child’s classroom teacher may occasionally be away, we work very closely together as a team. We know the students across our cohort well, including their individual needs, routines and supports, and will always do our best to maintain consistency and familiarity for everyone.
As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to any of us if you have any questions or concerns.
Have a wonderful weekend and, hopefully, a healthy Week 7!
Hailee, Dave, Emma and Andrew

Upcoming Learning
Literacy
Over the next two weeks, students will discover the secrets of silent letters including h – gh, rh, wh, ch (rhyme, gherkin, echidna, whale), st and sc (whistle, science) and the 'odd bodds' (w like in two, n in Autumn, column and Wednesday). They will also learn a new spelling pattern for /j/ spelled 'dge' like in the judge's hat, as well as exploring /j/ at the end of words spelled 'ge.' We will introduce a new /u/ spelling as 'o' like in 'a son and brother as well as the /u/ spelling as 'ou' like in young, touch and country.
In our writing time, we’ll continue to get creative by learning how to organise and build awesome informative paragraphs. We’ll also explore the cool features of informative texts, using the inspiring non-fiction book The First Scientists by Corey Tutt as our guide. Ask your children to share some of the information they have learned about inventions from the first scientists!!!!!!!!!!
Numeracy
In Maths, we will continue our Multiplication and Division units with a focus on establishing the difference between sharing and grouping, as well as continuing our new fluency routine. The students have now had intensive focus on 0s, 1s and 2s timetables and are increasing their accuracy and speed. They have also started grids with 5s and 10s timetables and are familiarising themselves with these facts and discovering the link between their skip counting knowledge and multiplication facts.
We will be exploring mass in relation to volume, predicting, measuring and comparing the mass of a variety of objects.
Science - Objects in Our Solar System
Students will learn about Earth as one of eight planets and other objects that make up the solar system. They will consider changing patterns in the sky by observing the daytime sky and exploring the phases of the Moon. Students will learn about constellations, including those of First Nations Australians, and recreate a constellation using chalk or craft materials. They will investigate how and why their shadows change throughout the day.
Wellbeing
Our Term 3 focus will be on Personal and Cultural Strengths as well as Help Seeking. We will be covering the following topics and activities during Term 3! If you would like to read more, you can access the resource book by clicking the green button below!

Bullying: No Way
The Grade 2 students learned about the importance of 'Being an Upstander' for Bullying: NO Way Week and watched this video which helped them develop a deeper understanding of the concept. We also enjoyed the collective 'Do It For Dolly Day' whole school fundraiser on Thursday where the school was painted in a sea of blue to raise awareness, stand together against bullying and to fundraise!
