Connect: Year 5

Dear Families,
The students are practicing away with enthusiasm and confidence, demonstrating a positive attitude and a willingness to participate as they learned the choreography. We are excited for the upcoming book week, fathers day afternoon and athletics.
Costumes for the concert
We are asking that Grade Five students dress as cowboys/cowgirls.
Denim jeans/shorts and a flannel shirt will be needed. Cowboy hats, vests and bandanans will be optional.

Literacy
We have kicked off our exciting new class novel, The Last Bear! Students are diving into rich discussions with their peers, sharing ideas, making connections and exploring the text in depth. We’ll also be developing our sentence expansion skills, focusing on the who, what, when, where, why and how to create clear and effective summarising sentences. As we journey through The Last Bear, students will also explore persuasive texts and important real-world issues, including climate change and animal extinction.
Numeracy
Get ready to make some important mathematical connections! Over the coming weeks, students will explore the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages, learning how to convert between each form. They’ll apply their knowledge to real-world situations and use addition to explore how different amounts can be combined to create wholes.
It’s time to get our protractors ready! Students will investigate different types of angles found within shapes and develop their skills in measuring, adding and subtracting angles. They’ll be putting their mathematical thinking to work as they explore angles in a range of shapes and problems.
Inquiry
We’re getting ready to explore how our Australian democracy works! Students will learn about Australian government, the roles and responsibilities of different levels of government, and the key parts of our Parliament. They’ll develop their understanding of how decisions are made and how citizens play a role in our democracy.
Wellbeing
Over the next two weeks, students will continue building their wellbeing toolkit by exploring help-seeking strategies. We’ll discuss who we can turn to for support, how to recognise when we need help and the different ways we can seek support for ourselves and others.
