Hi Tarneit Rise Families,

Our drama learning continued throughout Weeks 7 and 8, with students across the school applying the skills they had developed throughout the term. From storytelling and puppetry to improvisation and filmmaking, students demonstrated creativity, confidence and collaboration as they worked towards completing performances and projects.

Prep students continued developing their performance skills by bringing the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears to life. They used their voices, facial expressions and body movements to portray different characters and communicate the story to an audience. Where time allowed, students also explored performing The Three Little Pigs. In Week 8, students reflected on their drama learning throughout the term, identifying new skills they had developed and celebrating what they had successfully achieved in their performances.

Grade 1 students explored how Aboriginal people have used puppetry and storytelling to share stories and ideas. Students revisited the story of Bunjil and Waa and used puppets to retell the story through character, movement and voice. In Week 8, students were introduced to shadow puppetry, learning how light, shadow and movement could be used to create a performance. They then designed and created their own shadow puppets in preparation for further puppetry activities.

Grade 2 students spent Weeks 7 and 8 designing and creating their own rod puppets. They considered the appearance, features and movement of their characters while learning how the design of a puppet could support its role in a performance. These puppets were created in preparation for the puppet shows students would perform at the end of the term.

Grade 3 students worked collaboratively in small groups to develop performances using open scripts. They extended the scripted scene by devising what might have happened before and after it, allowing them to create a complete story. Students incorporated costumes and props to enhance their performances while focusing on the elements of drama, including character, setting, space, context and conflict. They explored how these elements could work together to communicate meaning and create an engaging performance for an audience.

Grade 4 students worked in small groups to devise original performances inspired by a conflict prompt. They developed characters, established settings and experimented with different ways of resolving the conflict within their scenes. Costumes and props were incorporated to enhance characterisation and support the storytelling. Throughout the process, students focused on intentionally using the elements of character, setting, space, context and conflict to develop clear and engaging performances.

Grade 5 students moved into the production stage of their short film projects. Using their scripts and storyboards as guides, students filmed their scenes while applying their knowledge of acting for the camera, camera angles and different shot types. They also incorporated costumes to establish characters and support the setting and story of their films. Students worked collaboratively in their production teams, taking responsibility for both performance and filmmaking roles.

Grade 6 students continued developing their short films by applying their detailed storyboards during the filming process. They made purposeful decisions about characterisation, costume, camera angles, shot selection and positioning to communicate their stories effectively on screen. Students refined scenes through multiple takes where required and worked collaboratively to ensure their acting and filmmaking choices supported the intended mood, context and meaning of their films.

It was fantastic to see students bringing together the many drama skills they had developed throughout Term 3. As we moved towards the final weeks of the term, students continued to demonstrate growing confidence, creativity and teamwork while creating performances that showcased their learning.
