Visual Arts

In Visual Arts, students have continued to explore a variety of Elements of Art, with a particular focus on texture, form and value. Students have been developing their skills through a range of creative, hands-on activities and experimenting with different materials and techniques.

All students were also busy creating a special Father’s Day / Special Person’s Day gift. It was wonderful to see the care, creativity and thought students put into making something special for an important person in their lives.

Foundation

Foundation students have been busy painting their air-dried clay turtles. Students carefully added colour and details to bring their sculptures to life, continuing to develop their understanding of form and texture while working with three-dimensional artworks.

Year 1/2

Year 1/2 students completed their wonderful textured monsters from a few weeks ago. They used a variety of materials, including fabric, corrugated cardboard, foam, ribbon, pom poms and other collage materials, to explore how different surfaces can create visual and tactile texture. Each monster was unique and full of personality!

Year 3/4

Year 3/4 students explored the Element of Art Value, learning how artists use different shades from light to dark to make objects appear more three-dimensional. Students drew a balloon animal and selected one oil pastel colour for their artwork. They considered where the light source would hit their balloon dog and used lighter and darker values to create highlights, shadows and the appearance of a shiny, rounded surface. 

They also created a collage flower, using glow-in-the-dark paint to create vibrant petals before adding extra details and patterns with oil pastels. These activities allowed students to continue experimenting with colour, contrast, pattern and value in creative and engaging ways.

Year 5/6

Year 5/6 students also explored Value through a landscape painting activity. Students selected one colour and experimented with changing its value by gradually adding black to create darker shades and white to create lighter tints. They then applied these colours to their landscape, creating a gradual transition from dark to light. This activity helped students understand how value can be used to create depth, contrast and atmosphere within an artwork.

Students also had fun creating a lava lamp-inspired artwork using glow-in-the-dark paint. They explored contrasting colours and organic, flowing shapes to recreate the movement and effect of a lava lamp. The glow-in-the-dark paint added an exciting element to their work, allowing their designs to take on a completely different appearance when viewed in the dark.

Every student has had the opportunity to plan, design and create their own unique artwork during Visual Arts lessons. Once completed, families will be able to purchase a variety of personalised keepsakes featuring their child's artwork.

PE 

Over the last two weeks students have continued to develop their understanding and skills in relation to athletic events, particularly shot put, discus, and triple jump, to prepare them for the House Athletics Day.

For shot put the key words I used to help students understand the technique included

• Dirty Neck – as student need to rest the shot put against their neck, which might get dirty
• Bolt pose – Usain Bolt’s famous pose which get the students in the correct position to push the shot put
• Push – the students need to push the shot put, not just throw it.

The students follwed these instructions really well and did the technique very well.

For Discus, students worked together and I explained how the discus should roll off, or touch their pointer finger last. Again student did this really well and there were some very impressive throws.

Finally, triple jump includes the steps of hop, step and jump. Students worked through this slowly together and then were encouraged to move through these steps faster and then from a running position. It can get quite confusing but student did a great job.

I was so impressed with their listening and following instructions and they performed so well at the House Athletics.

Well done to everyone and they all had a great time learning these new skills.

House Athletics

On Monday 31st August, the whole school caught buses to Mentone Athletics track or our annual house athletics day. It has become one of our biggest day’s of the year, and everyone has a great time.

All students competed in shot put, discus, long jump, triple jump, high jump, gum boot toss and 100m sprints. We even had a 100m sprint between the Preps to grade 2 students with their parents which was a highlight for the kids. Thanks for those who got involved.

The weather was amazing and tudent students did a wonderful job and their behaviour was exceptional. Well done to everyone. Also the teachers and ESS staff were amazing running the events and managing the students, thanks to everyone for a wonderful day.

Students in years 3-6 who won an event will now be selected for the school team to move through to the Kingston District competition which will take place in early term 4.

Interschool Sports - Basketball

Last week 19 year 5 and 6 girls and boys went to Sandringham Basketball club to play in the Kingston District competition against the local schools.

Everyone tried their best and behaved very well. It was a fun, great day, with both teams winning one game each, but the support, encouragement and teamwork was fantastic. Well done to all involved.

Music 

Music Newsletter - Week 8

Preps:

Over the last two weeks the students in Prep revisited their learning about Percussion and took time to practise using the Djembe and the bucket drums. Students learnt patterns that incorporated slaps and bass in different combinations. Students also practised using the bucket drums by hitting their stick into the centre of the drum and using the edge of their stick and bucket drum to create different sounds.

Year 1 & 2

Over the last two weeks, students in Grade 1 began experimenting with Garageband and how they could use loops to create their own compositions. Unfortunately due to Athletics being scheduled on Monday of week 8, they missed their music lesson. However, beginning in week 9, the grade 1 students will be writing lyrics for a simple song and composing the music for their lyrics in week 10. This unit of learning will carry over into Term 4 to give students enough time to refine their song and record their vocals for their songs.

The Year 2 students have been doing an amazing job filming and editing their short scenes using the iPads. In week 8, they began planning and storyboarding their advertisements which they are aiming to film in Week 9 and edit in Week 10. To ensure students have enough time to polish their advertisements, this unit of learning will carry over into the first 3 weeks of Term 4.

Year 3 & 4

The Year 3 and 4 students have spent the last two weeks planning and storyboarding their advertisements. Their plans are looking fantastic and I’m excited to see what they are able to film and edit over the next two weeks. To ensure there is enough time to refine their advertisements, the year 3 and 4 students will continue this unit of learning over the first 3 weeks of Term 4.

Year 5 & 6

Over the last two weeks, students in years 5 and 6 have begun their unit of learning about music composition. They have explored how ideas can be combined to create lyrics and learned about the conventions of lyrics and song structure in pop songs. Over the next two weeks students will finish writing their lyrics and begin crafting their music using Garageband. Due to the year 5 and 6 camp happening in week 9, this unit of learning will continue into Term 4.
