Amazing 5/6

From the Teachers

Term 3 continues to be full of exciting events, and we can’t believe the busiest term is nearly over! We are extremely proud of how the 5/6 students have embraced every opportunity and made lasting memories together. 

Our Market Stall Day was a huge success! The students should be incredibly proud of their efforts, with this year’s stalls raising even more money than in previous years. The students’ creativity and enthusiasm were evident throughout the day, and the rest of the school had a great time visiting each stall. We would like to give a big thanks to all the families who went above and beyond to donate, bake, decorate and support this memorable event. 

Basketball Day was also a fantastic event for the 20 students involved. It was great to see every team member give it their all and enjoy the opportunity to represent our school. 

Book Week was another standout this year, with our students putting an incredible amount of effort into their costumes. 

With all of these exciting events behind us, our students are now eagerly looking forward to the highlight of Term 3: 5/6 Camp! With Camp Woorabinda approaching, the excitement is certainly building, and we are looking forward to sharing this special experience with our students.

Learning Focuses

Literacy

This week, our Year 5/6 students have begun exploring persuasive writing, building on their understanding of how writers can use language and evidence to influence their audience. Students have been exploring a range of environmental topics, including the importance of protecting Antarctica and the Amazon Rainforest. They have been developing their ability to form strong opinions, consider different perspectives and support their ideas with convincing reasons, statistics and evidence. 

Mathematics

In Year 5, students have begun exploring location using Cartesian planes. They are learning to identify and label the x-axis and y-axis and are developing their understanding of how coordinates can be used to locate specific points. Students are currently working within the first quadrant, building confidence in reading and plotting coordinates.

In Year 6, students have been extending their understanding of location by exploring all four quadrants of the Cartesian plane. They have been identifying the x-axis and y-axis and learning how positive and negative coordinates are used to locate points across the different quadrants. Students have been applying their knowledge to read and plot coordinates, developing their accuracy and mathematical reasoning.
