with Caitlin, Georgia & Claire

Hello Prep families,

We can’t believe it is the end of Term Two! Our Preps are now half way through their first year at school. Thank you to our Willy Primary families for your continued support during a big and eventful term. Our Preps certainly deserve a well earned rest in the holidays! Please enjoy some photos below of the great work we’ve been doing this term.

100 Days of Prep

The hundredth day of school is coming up in Term Three on Thursday 30th July. We sent a note about it home this week. You may like to start thinking about a costume idea over the holidays, in preparation for our celebration day. Your costume could be party clothes, dressing as someone 100 years old or making something for the theme one hundred.

Respectful Relationships

Next term for Respectful Relationships our topic is ‘Gender Norms and Stereotypes’.  We will be reflecting on the influence of gender norms and stereotypes, developing an awareness of positive and negative gender norms, challenging negative gender norms and developing appreciation and respect for differences. In Prep, these activities look like: conversations about the fact that everyone likes different things and that’s okay (e.g. everyone can like or dislike pink or soccer or fish), realising that everyone experiences the same emotions (e.g. happy, sad, angry) and can express them in similar ways. If you would like to know anything more about these lessons, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 9 - 10

Reading - Students will continue learning about appropriate reading behaviours, including pointing to the words as we read. They will also discuss text features such as full stops and capital letters. As part of our Little Learner’s program, students begin the year learning single letter sounds, with our current focus being the /k/, /x/ and /w/ sounds. To help us remember these sounds, we have met Kylie the koala, Max the fox and Wilbur the whale. There are songs about these characters available online, which you may like to listen to with your child at home or in the car:

Kylie the koala - Spotify

Max the fox - Spotify

Writing - Students are learning to correctly form letters and use our sound knowledge to write sentences. This fortnight we are focusing on forming the letters ‘k’, ‘x’ and ‘w’. We are also learning to read and write the heart words ‘she’, ‘he’, ‘we’, ‘to’, ‘do’ and ‘was’ this term.

Numeracy - Students are revising common 2D shapes (triangles, circles, squares, rectangles) and trying to recognise them in our surroundings. We are also revising creating and copying repeating patterns. What kind of patterns can you make and copy?

Inquiry - As we draw closer to the end of the term we are wrapping up our Inquiry Unit, ‘What is Changing Around Us?’ Students are demonstrating what they have learned by drawing 3 things that they know can change, and also describing the different changes that we make when the seasons change.

Homework - Each Monday, students will be given an activity to complete at home that relates to our weekly sound or maths focus. The activity in their ‘Home Learning Book’ will be collected each Friday. Homework in Prep should take no longer than 15 minutes.  Students should also be reading the books from their book bag to their parents each day/night.
