Bastille Day Celebration - Tuesday 14th July

Hello WPS families and community!

The whole school will be celebrating the French National Day of Bastille Day on July 14th, the second day back from Term 3. This event is a way to promote the French language taught at Willy Primary, which will reinforce the French values of ‘Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite’ (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity).

To complement the whole school Bastille Day celebration, Prep to Year 6s will attend a French show performed by Philipe and Jacques combining French music, mime, comedy, and drama in the P.E. Hall (Consent and payment on Compass). These experienced performers will take students on a hilarious journey of French drama and music!

Prep to Year 2 - session 3 in the Hall

Year 3 - 6- session 2 in the Hall

Families are welcome to come and enjoy our Bastille Day parade held at 2:30 on the basketball courts at WPS.

This will be a day of fun and learning, mixed with entertainment, full cultural immersion and exploration for the taste buds to celebrate together!

To prepare for our celebration, we are asking families to start thinking about putting together:

1. A French outfit for your child (no need to buy anything new! A bit of imagination and creativity goes a long way)

2. Ideas for a French lunchbox for the day (you can start researching recipes of simple yet yummy French foods to prepare at home with family to bring to school on the day). We are also encouraging students who have one to bring along a labelled picnic blanket as we plan to eat our lunch as a whole school on the oval.

Visual Art

Another end to a very busy term! A big thank you to everyone who donated boxes, newspaper and bottles. We have made very good use of them, and the students have enjoyed creating with them. All classes have been finishing up their current pieces and have begun working on their ‘Crazy Camel’ pieces. There will be more information about this fundraiser later in the year.

Grade Prep

This week the Prep’s have continued to work on their boom boxes, adding details and finishing touches. I’m very excited to see these displayed at our Art show in term 4.

The Grade 5/6’s continue to work on their food trucks and are having fun constructing their vans whilst creating lots of 3D elements. Nearly all the 5/6’s have now had a go at experimenting with the ‘Geli Plate’ with great success. So many unique and individual results! Everyone has enjoyed this new art technique.

Physical Education

As we reach the end of Term 2, it's a great moment to look back on a busy and rewarding term of Physical Education across the school. The effort, energy and sportsmanship on show every week has been fantastic.

Our Foundation to Year 2 students have continued to build their fundamental movement skills — running, jumping, throwing and catching — through a range of fun, game-based activities designed to develop coordination, balance and confidence. It's been wonderful to see their skills, teamwork and big smiles grow week by week.

In Years 3 and 4, students have been developing their striking and fielding skills through games like tee-ball and cricket-style activities. There's been a strong focus on the fundamentals — batting, bowling, throwing, catching and backing up teammates in the field — along with plenty of teamwork and fair play.

Our Year 5 and 6 students have also been working through a striking and fielding unit, but taking it up a level — refining their batting and bowling technique, thinking tactically about fielding positions, and applying game strategy in more competitive match situations. It's been great to see their decision-making and leadership develop alongside their skills.

A highlight of the term was our House Athletics Competition at the Newport Athletics Track, where all Year 3–6 students competed for house points and cheered each other on in their house colours. A huge congratulations to the students who finished in the top two of their events and have earned the chance to represent Williamstown Primary at the District Athletics Carnival in Term 3 — we're very proud of you, and can't wait to see you in action.

A few reminders as we head into the cooler months: please make sure students come to school in their sports uniform and appropriate footwear on their timetabled PE days, and that they're dressed warmly for outdoor sessions.

Wishing all our families a safe, happy and active holiday break. I look forward to seeing everyone back, refreshed and ready for a big Term 3 of sport.

Warm regards,

Paddy Gallivan
