Girton Table Tennis Players Star at Sandhurst Interschools

On Thursday 12th August, Girton’s Year 7 & 8 Table Tennis players took on the best of Central Victoria’s schools in the Sandhurst Interschools Tournament.

The Year 7 side was led by Noah Willits who lead the boys with aplomb chalking up back to back early victories and establishing themselves on the competition. In a tightly fought competition, the Girton boys competed with skill and determination – even more impressive as a couple of the boys are very new to the sport. The new boys (Henry Martin and Luke Fisher) soon found their stride on court and were quickly controlling rallies and punishing balls when given an opportunity. Fred McKenzie was cool, calm and collected on court also. At the end of the day, our Year 7 team finished 3rd overall and the boys should be absolutely thrilled with their results on the day.

Our Year 8 boys were captained by young gun – Henry Bain. Henry quickly caught the attention of opposing schools as he dominated the court. Max Henderson is commended on playing ‘up’ a year level, more than holding his own against his Year 8 opponents. Max Miller is commended on agreeing to fill-in at the last minute and with Rory Scholes, the boys within one point of knocking off the highly fancied BSE outfit and winning the day. All in all, for our ‘rookie’ Year 7 squad to come third and for our Year 8s to be runner up was an excellent achievement. All of the table tennis players who participated last Thursday are commended on their competitive drive, their team spirit and their sportsmanship on the day.

We now look forward to the Year 9 & 10 Tournament on the 26th August.
