Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Family
In the spirit of reconciliation, Wantirna College acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
In recognition of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family, the college collaborated with Mr. Shaun Thomas, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement Worker from Cohealth, to work with our students and develop a mural to be displayed on the Senior Centre wall. Cohealth is a non-for-profit community health organisation that strives to improve health and wellbeing for all, and lead the way in reducing health inequity in partnership with people and the communities in which they live.
Our very own students, alongside Mr. Nick Elliott, who is the college’s Marrung Lead Advocate, worked with Shaun to develop ideas and imagery as subject matter for the mural. They were asked how they would like to represent learning and growth through a cultural lens.
Students then unpacked their goals and wrote down their ideas so the team could draw upon imagery of what they wanted to see within the mural. The mural is already well underway and now our students are in the phase of finalising the mural design.
The next phase over the course of this Semester will see the team collaborate to finalise the mural design. If you have an opportunity, please come and visit the amazing design and view it’s progression as it unfolds.
