Year 3

Writing:

In writing, we have been continuing with our Narrative unit. The students also did some practise Naplan writing before the Naplan tests last week. The students have been focusing on character development, adding dialogue and coming up with some exciting problems and solutions for their narratives. Over the next few weeks, we will be putting together all the different parts of the narrative and publishing a final copy.

Reading:

During NAPLAN, students undertook reading through the use of multimodal texts. They shared their passions and we investigated further by watching BTN videos, speeches, reports etc. They wrote down questions, identified the main idea, located key vocabulary and finally summarised what they learnt from a particular topic. We demonstrated how to connect real life skills in a new form of learning. Students are currently undergoing reading assessments to celebrate their growth and setting new goals. We are so incredibly proud of our Grade 3s! Well done!

Maths:

This term in Maths, the Year 3 students have continued learning about multiplication. We have focused on making the links between the multiplication symbol, arrays and repeated addition. We have also been learning about multiplies and factors while practising our multiplication in Maths.

The students are also learning about data collection and graphing. We will be conducting surveys, using tally marks and displaying the information collected in appropriate displays such as pictographs and bar graphs.

Science:

Over the last few weeks students have been looking at the phases of the moon. Students also learnt that the sun reflects light onto the moon which reflects onto Earth giving us light during night time.

We have been learning about the phases of the moon which are: New moon, crescent moon, half-moon and full moon. We have also learnt that it takes the Earth 12 months to rotate around the sun.

Year 4

What’s been happening in Grade 4

Term 2 is flying by. In maths we are learning about multiplication. In reading we have been looking at literature circles and developing our reading skills by making predictions, making connections, writing summaries and inferring. In writing, we have been writing narratives and using the seven steps such as sizzling starts, show don’t tell and many other techniques. In digital technology we have been learning to code on code.org. We have also looked at programming and algorithms. In SAKG we have been looking at winter produce. When gardening we mulch, plant and water.

Grade 4 Visits the Melbourne Museum

The grade 4 visit to the museum saw students engage in two self-guided trails where they conducted research to learn more about: The Melbourne Enquiry and First Peoples Place and Culture. The Melbourne Enquiry involved students undertaking and learning about the City of Melbourne, the history of the city and possibilities for the future. The First Peoples Place and Culture Enquiry allowed students to learn about the diversity and longevity of Australia’s First Peoples and the significance of place to their culture and identity.

Year 5

In Reading grade 5 we are learning how to summarise texts. We learnt the SWBST (somebody, wanted, but, so then). Summarising is when you read a text, or watch a movie or tv show and then write down the key pieces of information and leave out unnecessary parts.

We have also started reading our new grade 5 class novel ‘The Grace Stories’-which also ties in with our PBL unit where we are looking at Australian history and migration.

In Writing we have been learning about journal writing. Journals are when you can write and record about your day or your feelings in first person. We have learnt about the different types of journals someone can keep-such as personal journals, food journals, and travel journals etc. Students in year 5 are observing a variety of journals so that we can see the features of the different journals.

In Maths we are focusing on data. Data is a way of collecting information in different ways-such as surveys, a tally and then representing it in different ways such as a bar graph, line graph, dot plot and lastly how we can analyse our data to find different trends. In class we have surveyed multiple students and displayed our information into graphs. We have learnt about some of the types of graphs and we also talked about where to put headings and labels on certain types of graphs.

Lastly, in PBL we are learning about Australian Migration. We have formed groups and researched different periods of migration throughout Australian history-such as the First Fleet, World War 1 and World War 2, the Gold Rush, White Australia. We are very excited about our upcoming excursion to the Migration Museum and then exploring the Australian Migration Bridge in the Melbourne City.
