Prep-2 Sector

PREP

o celebrate Education Week, classes opened their doors to welcome parents in to view their learning. The preps enjoyed sharing activities and showing how much they have learnt so far. We started with our InitiaLit PowerPoint on the TV where we practice letters, sounds and reading. Then we followed it with some reading activities working in small groups where the parents could join in too. The students loved sharing their learning with all the families.

Earlier in the Term, the prep students got to meet their grade 6 Buddy. They all worked together to draw a picture on their ‘Buddy Bear’ sheet and get to know each other. By the look on the preps and grade 6’s faces, they all seemed to have a really great time. We are looking forward to many more fun classes together in the near future.

Year 1

Year 1 students have continued to write letters. They have written to their friends and family. The students understand that they need a greeting, some information in the body of the text and a pleasant way to sign off their letter.

In Maths, students have been using 100 charts to help them skip count, count forwards and backwards. They have also been looking for patterns in the charts too.

In Play Based Learning students have been looking at Transport and how the modes of transport have changed from the past to the present. In the next few weeks the students are going on their first big excursion to the city, to the museum. They are excited because they will see lots of artefacts from the past.

Year 1 teachers: Brooke Puma, Monika Hackworthy, Molly Hiles and Nicholle Russell.

Year 2

The Year Two’s have been continuing to learn about community services and how they support the population of an area. They have been role playing being a teacher, learning about why a doctor uses a stethoscope, showing their understanding of the development of Caroline Springs by painting before and after pictures and modelling a community with playdough.

In Numeracy we have begun addition and subtraction activities by making sure students are aware of the meaning of vocabulary such as equal, more, all together, less, take away and that they understand the meaning of the signs +, - , and =  used in these operations. Students have be given worded problems to solve as well as simple equations. They have also used Seesaw to complete some addition and subtraction activities.

We have been continuing our spelling program by working on adding the suffix ‘ful’ to the end of words and practising using personal, text and world connections to understand what we read.

Students have been learning how to extend their writing by creating compound sentences using the words and, but, so, because and or. This gives them the opportunity to create more interesting writing and supports the work we have done so far on adjectives, verbs, nouns, pronouns, prepositions and adverbs.
