Library News

Ever wondered if we can see sound? Could time stand still? What are quarks? What field is Katherine Johnson, Grace Hopper and Alan Turing associated with?

What is the tallest tree in the world?

So many questions for curious minds to ask, and the Library team is here to help find the answers!

The library has joined in the celebrations for National Science Week this week, with a focus on some of the fabulous non-fiction we have on a wide range of science subjects, all of which are available for loan.

As a bit of fun, our ‘astronaut’ Australian Andy Thomas, made a guest appearance to prove that working in the science field can literally take you to the stars. He was very popular with the students who poked, prodded and chatted to him. He has withstood their attention with only a few air top-ups, thanks to our wonderful Maintenance team.

Lit Week is nearly upon us (21- 26 August) and preparations for fun activities are complete. There are still a few places for some activities, so please ask at the library, or through SIMON Daily Notices, to join a group activity.

An integral facet of the Lit Week celebrations is the announcement of the awards by the Childrens’ Book Council of Australia. From the list of notables, a short list of six titles in each of the Older Readers and Younger Readers categories are up for Book of the Year in their reading range. We have most of the notables titles and all of the shortlisted, so students and staff can borrow the books and see if they agree with the judges. We’ll let you know who the winners are in our next newsletter.

Time for some laughs:

Why didn’t the burglar want to read a book?
Fear of getting a long sentence.

Where does a bookworm sleep?
Between the covers.

A number of students, groaning after they have read the joke of the day, have been challenged to come up with their own library jokes. We look forward to the results which we will share with you so you can judge if the jokes are of a higher standard than those of the Library staff! All contributions welcome.

Happy reading!

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge - 17 days to go!

Congratulations and a very big thank you to all students who have logged onto the challenge and have begun recording the books they have read.

We are absolutely delighted to report that 22 students have successfully completed the challenge already.

The challenge closes on Friday 2 September, which means there are only 17 days remaining!

We would like to encourage all students to work towards completing the challenge over the next few weeks, especially the 60 or more students who have already logged on and are well on their way.

Remember there is a $10 canteen voucher awarded to all successful students.

Why not be rewarded for reading your English, Reading Room and other books?

If you are having trouble finding suitable books, please contact either the librarians or Ms Celine Bush to help you.
