Swimming Carnival

The swimming carnival was a big hit this year! In the pool we had several dominant swimmers across all age groups who we wish the best of luck at the next round. Zumba was back with a splash this year, ran by volunteers from the aerobics program. We also had many other successful non swimming events such as; face painting that was enjoyed by hundreds, Mr Vance’s dunk-a-tron and a bake stall.

School spirit was high with hundreds of people dressed up in either house colours or the first letter of their name! Eager students were chanting for their house to wrap up the swimming carnival and earn final points before the winning house was announced.

Congratulations to Lyons who placed first this year with 475 points and the most successful swimmers and participants! In a close second place we had Chisholm with 459 points, Maris third with 375 points and Melba not far behind with 324 points!

Congratulations to everyone who swam and dressed up! We look forward to seeing the same level of enthusiasm and participation at the athletics carnival :)

Year 11

House Swimming – Friday 25th February at Prahran Aquatic Centre

House Swimming was another whole school success! With around 800-900 students attending on the day in non-swimming and swimming events – the weather was superb. Participation in the pool was massive across our junior age groups and Zumba was a success in the older age groups. For 30 of our strongest swimmers – this day allowed them to showcase their skills and win the rite to compete at Division level. The theme of the day was ‘come as the first letter of your first/surname’ and the interpretation of this was amazing! From cars, to dalmatians, to police uniforms – our students certainly know how to do a fancy dress up. On top of this, Mr. Vance’s dunk machine was a hit once again, the bake stall raised plenty of funds for charity, the Wellbeing team created some fun activities, Mrs. Busetti and the Art team had hundreds painting themselves in house colours. At last, Lyons were the real winners of the day in taking home the house cup for 2022 swimming.

Lyons – 1st – 475 points

Chisholm – 2nd – 459 points

Maris – 3rd – 375 points

Melba – 4th - 324 points

So with that, the day was huge success for all that attended and an exciting one to remember!

Senior Sport – Wednesday Feb 15th

The first sport day of the year began in style in the MGC gym with 16 keen volleyballers across two teams. The competition was quite small and included one other team in University High School. MGC B team played first and managed to take the game to 3 sets and unfortunately lost. Our two school teams played next and the MGC A team had a tough 2 sets, but managed to win. The deciding game was the third and final against University High School to decide the Division winner. MGC A came out strong and took the first set 15 to 5. The 2nd set came down to the wire and momentum swings were very consistent. The final score – MGC A winning in 2 sets 17 points to 15. Well done to our volleyballers who will now compete at Regional level on Thursday 31st of March at Darebin Community Sports Stadium in Reservoir.

Intermediate Sport – Wednesday Feb 23rd Cricket

On Wednesday the 23rd of March, the Intermediate Cricket A team went to Ross Straw Field to compete at the Inner North cricket round. Our main game for the day was against Uni high, to see who made it through to the next round.

We won the toss and decided to field first. After Sinead taking a nice wicket in the second over, Bronte and Emma’s tight bowling, wickets from Grace and Macy and Lily’s awesome keeping along with some great run outs, we saw Uni High put 18 runs on the board from their 10 overs. Now it was our turn to bat. Lily and Emma opened with some great boundaries, which was continued by Bronte and Daisy. Sophia and Macy were next with their quick running. Grace and I followed, adding more runs to our total. Last to the crease were Sinead and Violet who ended our innings nicely with a few good shots to finish.

In the end, we had a comfortable win, everyone played well and even in the heat, we all had fun! We are all looking forward to our next game on Wednesday 2nd of March. Thank you to Mr Fero-Kovassy for choosing the teams, Mr Monaghan and Mrs B for taking us and umpiring, and to Jade and Cara for their great coaching!!

Tennis

On the 23rd of Feb, about 24 students from years 9 and 10 attended the Interschool Sports Tennis at Royal Park. It was very hot, reaching a high of 30 degrees, but the heat didn’t stop any of MGC’s players. The social teams, Holly Williamson & Isabelle Koch, Maddy Cook & Penny Vaughan, Helena Webb & Alexandra Hastie, Olivia Johns & Sa’Adiya Mohamed, Gem Robins-Pittock & Audrey Ahmed, Lily Major & Eve Pollehn and Harriet Turner-Brown & Zoe Quinlan had heaps of fun playing friendly doubles with the other schools who attended interschool (Princess Hill High, University High, Brunswick High and Richmond High). The competitive tennis B team’s players were Yumi Kurosawa, Nandini Vyas and Nora and Clara Dandurand. Unfortunately, Clara was away on the day but thankfully Heidi Junge and Jasmine Leally stepped in to help out in the doubles and singles competitions. The B team played amazingly winning a fair amount of their matches despite the heat. The competitive tennis A team: Sophie Watts, Martina Phan, Imogen Scott-Young and Genevieve Chia smashed their way through both their singles and doubles matches, majority of them won in straight sets, earning them a spot in the next round of the competition, division. Also, A special thanks to Mr V who helped on the day helping the competition run smoothly. Overall, the day was really awesome, and everyone had fun playing some tennis in the first interschool sports of 2022, and good luck to the A team for their next competition!

Volleyball

On Wednesday the 23rd of March, MGC's Volleyball A & B teams with their knee pads, long socks, tight ponytails, and jerseys, were ready to go! The competition kicked off at 10.30am, with both teams winning their first match ups! But unfortunately, the second match up was not so easy for the A's, and all of a sudden, the ball like a rocket shot to the back of the court, and we lost. Progressing through the competition, the A's lost another game, but finished up with a victory! Whilst not the outcome we hoped, it was drowned out by the B Team's dominance winning 4/4 in their pool and our laughter and screams whilst cheering each other on!

Volleyball Social

With play in the MGC Gym, our 9/10 students enjoyed a day out with their friends in the social competition. The competition consisted of 10 teams, in which 6 were MGC teams. We were once again strong in these matches and the most competitive games were in fact against our own teams which made for great viewing according to onlookers. A big thanks to Mr. Fero-Kovassy for running the competition and Miss. Makim (CRT) for assisting. Thanks to the teaches who also helped umpire and score from all other schools.

Division Swimming – Tuesday March 1st

Another successful swimming meet for our swim team who came 2nd in the state last year behind Maribyrnong. Our swimmers managed to progress through to Regional finals in 40/42 events. Winning 36 of these in considerably strong performances. Strong individual performances from Charli Campbell and Lucy Crouch in 5 individual events. Zeina Abbass swam very well in 4 individual events. All relays and medley relays progressed as well in a solid team effort. Our 4 helpers on the day from year 9 & 10 were amazing. They compiled all of the data in the system for the division coordinator who was extremely appreciative of their roles. Thanks to Esme Keen, Lily Ellis, Matilda Noble and Lucia Pegler. Well done to Miss. Cameron-Martin for helping manage the students.

Intermediate Girls Cricket Regional Finals - Wednesday 2nd March

The first regional event for our successful year 9 & 10 team at Division the week before. Our team of 13 strong students travelled to Donath Reserve in Reservoir to take on schools such as Northcote and Montmorency in our Northern Metropolitan competition. Our students had a point to prove after winning state in Year 7 and following 2 impacted years of interschool sport. They were keen to progress through and had a challenging game against Northcote where we did not make enough runs in the first innings. Northcote were able to chase down our total with overs to spare in the second innings - a disappointing result for our team who tried their hardest against a tough outfit. The second game saw us back on the winners list, but it was Northcote who progressed through to state finals. There is always next year and we will come back stronger than ever! Thanks to Mr. V and our coaches on helping run the day.

Year 8 Sport Day – Thursday 3rd March Cricket

The year 8 cricket team ventured out to Princes Park to take on the competition from Inner North schools. It was a hot and humid Melbourne day and we had 2 teams in the competition, with 1 social team. Our MGC A team were too strong throughout the day for all teams and showed some class when playing University High winning 50 runs to 20 in the decider. It was also a highlight when our 2 competitive teams played each other and a tight battle, but it was MGC A who came up the strongest and will now play in the Regional Finals Friday 21st October in Term 4. Thanks to Miss. Habashi, Darcie Brown and our wonderful coaches Phoebe Bullock, Emma Watkins, Violet Peake for helping our students on the day.

Tennis

Our Tennis fanatics played their competition at Boroondara Tennis Centre. MGC had 3 social pairs, and an A team compete on the day. We were once again successful with our A team winning through to the final. Unfortunately, we lost to Uni High in the final game. Well done to Mrs. Ansons and Mrs. Wilson-Rychner for helping the teams on the day. As well as our wonderful coaches Eloise Boyd and Lucinda Hanrahan. Congratulations to our A team featuring Rameen Atti, Chiara Vituoso, Elsie Falkiner and Krishna Parith on their efforts in coming 2nd. We did however, win the photoshoot contest for the day! Volleyball

Well done to our A & B teams that competed at Brunswick Secondary College. Our two teams were very competitive over the day and our A team were able to win their way through to the final with ease in their pool. In the other pool of games, our B team was very competitive and only lost 1 game to Princes Hill. Princes Hill were the team to go through to the final to play our MGC A team for the rite to proceed to regional finals. A big challenge for the A team, but a fightback late in the first set saw us come home with a wet sail. The second set was won with ease and the team will now progress to Regional finals in Term 4 on the 25th October. Thank you to our wonderful CRT Mr. Walsh who took the teams over to Brunswick for the day and our coaches Indi Morris and Alex Saveski.

Volleyball Socials:

A big turn out at MGC for the social volleyball – 20 team competed in the MGC gym. MGC registers 7 teams in the competition and multiple teams went through the competition undefeated. It was the MGC blue bib team that won the competition for most wins from games played. Thank you to our CRT Molly for helping Mr. Monaghan on the day of competition and our wonderful coaches in Amy Cheung, Elisha Kim, Anjulia Fogarty, Ozge Duman and Katherine Richardson for umpiring, scoring and timing matches.

Softball

The day began at Burnley oval across from MGC. Our Softballers had 1 team competing on the day in the round robin competition. It was a very small comp, as Uni High were the only other team to register on the day with 2 teams. The softballers enjoyed some practice in the first hour of play with a skills session. The final 2 hours consisted of 2 games and our A team unfortunately lost to Uni High in the final. However, all players had a lot of fun on the day and were very happy to be out there. Thanks to our coaches Eva Donnelly and Olivia Cavka for assisting our players. And Mrs. Hanley for supervising play as well.

Year 7 Sport – Thursday March 17th

Softball:

On an overcast day up at Burnley oval our 2 softball teams were ready to play. The opponent, University High School and their 2 teams. The first round of games featured our A and Uni’s B’s and their A’s and our B’s. An upset occurred when our B team scored more runs than Uni’s A team. A great game by all involved. Our A team was also able to move through with a win in the first round. Our 2 teams then played each other and MGC A came out on top by 7 runs in a strong performance. The final game and decider between MGC A and Uni High A went down to wire. Fortunately, MGC A were able to pass Uni High’s score of 7 runs with the 2nd last batter hitting. A great performance, which now sees them proceed to Regional Finals in Term 2 on Thursday May 5th.

Year 7 Volleyball

The A & B teams headed to Brunswick Secondary College for another successful interschool sport day. MGC’s A team won the competition outright defeating our very own MGC B team in the final and have qualified for Regional level on Thursday 21st October (Term 4). The A and B volleyball team did an amazing job, and everyone gave it their all and had lots of fun. Thank you to our coaches Nova Kari Kari, Allie Bolle, Erin Penaia, Meg Chapman, Lucy Crouch & Indi Johnston for their support roles on the day. Also a big thank you to Mr. V for helping our champions as well.

Social Volleyball:

Another big turnout for our Year 7’s who played their very first sport day in high school. 22 teams participated in the competition that was ran by Mr. Fero-Kovassy and his wonderful Year 10 SAMs students – who did an amazing job of running their very own sports day and carrying out important organisational roles. From all reports our Year 7’s loved playing sport with their friends in competitive environment against other schools in our division. More success went to our social teams who were quite strong on the day as well. Thanks also to our coaches Heidi Roylance and Sylvie Rose-Kerr. As well as Miss Twist and her student teacher for supervising our players.

Tennis:

Our tennis teams took a trip to Boroondara Tennis Centre and had a wonderful day out with a sprinkle of rain in the morning. Our social teams of 12 pairs enjoyed a casual hit across 3-4 games for the day with their partners. Our A team won their way through to Regional Finals – defeating University High in strong fashion. Well done to Claudia Popovic, Maia Gurov, Kristina Bratkova and Ines Cooper on progressing to the Regional finals on Thursday 5th of May in Term 2. Thanks to Mrs Gia and Miss. Makim (CRTs) for taking our students out for the day. And also to our fabulous coaches Sophie Watts, Lucia Pegler, Selina Qureshi & Nora Dandurand on prepping our teams for strong performances.

Cricket:

Our Year 7 cricket teams headed over to Princes Park for the day. Some late changes due to unforeseen events, meant that our social team got the call up to play in the competitive competition in our MGC B team for the day. Strong performances by both teams allowed MGC A and MGC B to progress through to the final unscathed. A strong battle took place and there had to be one winner in the end. Unfortunately for our B team, MGC A came out on top due to making many more runs than MGC B in the finish. Well done to all on the day. Our MGC A team will now go through to Regional finals on Friday 21st of October in Term 4. A big thank you Miss. Miller and Miss. Gurr for supporting out teams on the day and our coaches Ruby McMenomy, Zara Lanigan & Tessa Williamson for a successful outing.

Northern Metropolitan Regional Finals for Swimming - Wednesday 23rd of March

The day began with 30 of our best swimmers heading up to WaterMarc Greensborough for a fine day inside the indoor pool. With a few last minute changes to teams that were unforeseen, we had some resilient students step up into new roles to help out a number of relays. Of which, 4/9 relays were successful in winning a gold medal and awarding them a lane at the state event next term. This included both the 13 & 14 years freestyle relays. And the 12-14 years and 17-20 years Medley relay. There was a lot of silver and bronze ware in the team as well which showed just how dominant MGC were as a school once again at Regional level. Individuals in the pool with golds were Zeina Abbass in two events, the 13 years 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke events – a huge effort. Lucy Crouch was also a dominant force in the 50m backstroke for the 14 years, Bridie Walsh won gold in the 12-15years 200m freestyle in a strong performance and Chloe Crystal won her 50m breaststroke event in the 18 years by a length. At the end of the day – MGC finished in 3rd place overall as a school! Another amazing effort. Thanks to Niamh Georgakas who helped manage the team as well and all of our helpers that timed lanes for the entire day.
