Introducing the Music Team 2022!

Hey! I’m Leanne Leong, your Senior Vice Music Captain for 2022! I’m working with my fellow captains, Evie Scott (Senior Music Captain), Lucinda Buckle (Middle School Vice Music Captain and Cherry Gao (Middle School Music Captain), to bring music to MGC! It’s an honour to be elected as MGC’s first specialist music portfolio, and we have a lot planned, from jam sessions to performances. Feel free to join us, and the other art portfolios, on our journey!

Pedal Power Cinema Performances!

The Pedal Power Cinema was a massive success! We hope you enjoyed all the musical performances, and that you had fun!

We’d like to thank everyone that came, helped and/or performed!

Special thanks to our organiser and host, Bea James as well as our many performers, including our staff performers, Ms Scurrah and Mr Sturgess! Thanks to our student performers Ruby Scott,  Year 10 Music students Meg Chapman,  Alicia Dang,  Milo Moore, Sienna Virtuoso, Alia Frischy-O’Connor, Elena Lekakis, Ava Rose Firman and Leanne Leong,  Audrey Ahmed, Bea James and Scarlett Tucker, Freya Swannell, Issy Edmondson and Jaeda McPherson. We would like especially like to thank Jaeda for all  their support and performances at Pedal Power over the years.

VCE Top Dance Class Excursion

On Wednesday the 16th of March the VCE Unit 1/2 and 3/4 students were given the opportunity to go and watch Top Class. This is a performance by 2021’s Unit 3/4 VCE and 2nd year VCE VET dancers, who were the top performing students in their practical dance assessments.

We were lucky enough to watch MGC’s Beth Pert, who performed both of her incredible dance works: her VCE Skills-Based Solo and her VCE Cohesive Composition Solo.

We got to watch roughly 35 dance performances, with a wide range of diversity in the styles, choreography, and intention of the dance pieces. All the dances were accompanied by a short speech about why these dancers were chosen to perform, and what in their execution of the criteria made their dances stand out.

Watching Top Class was an incredible opportunity for all the VCE dance students, it has helped us to better understand the requirements for our VCE solos, as well as the diversity we are able to put in them.  The performances left us inspired by our fellow dancers and helped us to find new creative ideas that we can use in our own dances.

Darby Wells (Senior Vice Dance Captain, VCE Dance Unit 1/2)

Top Class Music Excursion

On Monday the 21st of March, the students from the year 11 and year 12 Music Performance classes were able to go to see the 2022 top class music performances. Top Class is an annual showcase featuring students who received very high grades for their VCE music performance examinations in 2021. MGC students attended two concerts. The first one featuring classical style music and instruments such as the violin, flute, piano, classical guitar, and bagpipes. I personally really enjoyed this performance as I was able to see some amazing technique and listen to some beautiful music. The second concert featured more contemporary instruments including vocalists, saxophone, recorder, harp, trombone, and more. All in all, it was a great excursion and we were all really grateful to have the opportunity to attend!

Senior Music Captain.

Australian Ballet Performance With Year 9 Dance

Over the last 3 years MGC has had the privilege of being a part of the Australian Ballet’s education and outreach program. This year, the Year 9 Dance class has been working in collaboration with the Australian Ballet team to create a new short dance work. On Tuesday the 22nd of March, the Year 9s performed this work to an audience of other MGC dance students! We were then treated to a performance by the Australian Ballet artists, it was a new work called ‘The Story of Pomi and Gobba’ choreographed by an Indigenous artist within the company that told the story of the importance of being ourselves. It was a wonderful experience for our MGC dancers. Congratulations Year 9 Dance on a great performance that was put together in such a short period of time!

Year 11 Drama

The Year 11 Drama class have worked hard on multiple performances in the past term, including the studies of Konstantin Stanislavski and Bertolt Brecht. We have been putting together performances in increments; dividing it up by separating Brechtian techniques from other stimulus material. We then put these performances together to create an entire piece on "Fashion". Before this, we worked on Stanislavski's 7 Questions and how we could use these to create a believable and naturalistic performance. Despite our Theatre Performance visit being cancelled due to COVID, we have persevered to make the most out of class time and have formed a tight-knit group. We're very excited for what's waiting for us in Term 2!

Music Camp 2022

Get excited as on Friday the 6th of May, MGC will be having our annual music camp at Urban Camp in Parkville.  Last year was my first time going to music camp and coming back from it I felt so happy to be a part of the music program at MGC. It was so much fun playing music with new people, getting better at my instrument and a great introduction to the facilities MGC has to offer. MGC Choir and A’capella choir and the MGC Orchestra will have the opportunity to spend the weekend learning and practicing music with their ensembles. The band will be rehearsing the score for our school musical this year Mamma Mia as well as learning other music, improvising and having jam sessions together! And after a busy weekend of rehearsing and fun activities, parents will be able to come to watch their kids perform everything they have learnt over the weekend. We hope to see you there!
