International Women's Day 2022

School Captain IWD Event

On Friday 4th March, Jade, Monique and I along with Ms Stubley, Ms O’Connell, Ms Robertson and Ms Francis attended the Alliance of Girls’ Schools International Women’s Day breakfast at the Queen’s Hall in Parliament House. The theme of this year's International Women’s Day was “Break the Bias”, which aimed to remove the bias against women in all areas of life. We all met at the stairs of Parliament and went into the venue along with many other girls schools there to share the experience with us. There was a wonderful breakfast to start the day and we were able to meet others that shared the same passion for leadership. We also had the opportunity to reconnect with various schools we had met at a student leadership conference earlier in the year.

It was particularly inspiring to hear Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sally Capp, share her vast experiences and advice as the first woman to be directly elected as Lord Mayor. Sally’s extensive career in attempting to remove the divide between men and women has allowed her to build a career many would dream of.

Women at the event shared stories of two suffragists, Vida Goldstein and Zelda D’Aprano, who contributed heavily to the fight for women's rights within Australia. Vida was one of the only women to gain an international reputation for her involvement in the movement, whilst Zelda held a central role in the women’s liberation movement in Melbourne with the establishment of the Women’s Action Committee in 1970. Vida was one of four female candidates at the 1903 federal election, the first at which women were eligible to stand, demonstrating her courage to stand up and challenge the stereotypes of the time. In comparison, Zelda’s bravery to confront employers and fellow male co-workers established the legacy she continues to have on future generations today.

Overall, it was an amazing experience that has further instilled within us as leaders to empower all students at MGC to “break the bias” and continue to improve the world to establish a place where women are viewed as equal.
