Year 9 Embrace the Challenge

As an introduction to Physical Education this year, our Year 9 students are engaging in our “Embrace the Challenge” unit which has been specifically designed to build upon essential personal and social capabilities including collaboration, communication, problem solving, creative thinking and negotiation skills. Each lesson our students are presented with a range of activities which requires them to work efficiently and effectively with their team to solve the problem or to maximise their performance. Challenges have included Capture the Gold, Crossing the River, and Nuclear reactor. The Minute to Win It challenge created the most competition with students attempting to score maximum points in a range of tasks including thread the noodle, pedometer running, consecutive skips, the bottle flip and many more.

Surf Camp

Our Unit 1 Physical Education students will be on the annual Surf Camp from Wednesday 2 March – Friday 4 March. Initially the weather was looking like some heavy rain, however this seems to have changed in recent days – so very sunny days ahead which are perfect for surfing.

The Surf Camp gives students the opportunity to learn how to surf over three separate sessions and to put their skills to the test. It also provides opportunity to learn how to be self – sufficient as they make their own breakfast, lunch and dinner each day. We hope that they have a wonderful time and will share some photos in the next Newsletter.

Senior Boys Cricket

On Tuesday 22 February, the Nossal Senior’s boys cricket team headed out to Roy Dore Reserve with high hopes for the Regional quarter finals against Melbourne High School. After a 40 minute drive in peak hour traffic we arrived. Our team won the toss and elected to bowl first. We did get an early wicket but the Melbourne High players were batting superbly and were able to build a very good score. With entertaining bowling performances from our spinners, Harkirat Bajwa was able to obtain a hat trick and Jaskabeer Singh was close to capturing one as well.  The Nossal boys were able to keep in high spirits, even though Melbourne High was able to make 148 off 20 overs. The batting began with a good start by Jaskabeer Singh (22), however due to a middle order batting collapse, Nossal was only able to make a low total, leaving Melbourne High as the victors.  Ultimately, both teams played the game in excellent spirits and the final year students had an entertaining experience.

Senior Girls Cricket

On  22 February, Nossal’s Senior Girls cricket team, led by Ms Pumphrey arrived at the Roy Dore Reserve in ambition to represent Nossal and the Casey North Division at the regional level. We arrived around 15 minutes earlier than our opposing team, MacRob. Winning the toss at the start. Nossal elected to bowl first and with a strong opening by Gopi and Nandita, they assisted in creating a sense of dominance between both teams.

MacRob ended up making around 170 runs. When it was our time to bat, Nandita and Kohana opened with a powerful start, facing the bowlers from MacRob confidently. Albeit, there was a predominance of yorkers and full pitched bowls, both of which were quite fast. Then Saki came to join Nandita and they both stayed close to the crease to defend not only the wickets, but to retain the scores on the scoreboard; and Nandita and Saki made contributions of 11 runs and 7 runs respectively. As our batters either got caught or bowled out, they swapped from Saki to Sai, and Nandita to Saki. With many shots that crossed the boundary, the scoresheet looked promising near the end. The end result was quite obvious – MacRob was winning as their score consisted of not only runs, but no balls, byes, and leg byes. Although feeling disheartened, we were glad to obtain 57 runs, which earnt us a well deserved Maccas run after. Although we didn’t win, the day was filled with laughter, sportsmanship, and fun.
