Debating Team

Nossal High School has been a breeding ground for talent in the discipline of debating for many years. For the newcomers of the 2022 Debating Team, Friday 18 February was their training day, led by proud alumni debater Nadia Hadzikadic. 

The day was filled with guidance, instruction and tips by the former School Captain, who began by explaining the roles of each speaker in a debate. The theoretical knowledge learned by the 50+ new debaters was fully rounded by a mock debate that took place in the afternoon. The topic was “That artists should be held legally accountable for deaths and injuries that occur at their concerts.” The mock debate demonstrated to the new debaters the significance of debating as a cornerstone of classical education and how it provides a meaningful way to challenge perspectives on issues within society. The training day was a learning experience that remains an annual tradition at Nossal after so many years and continues to enhance the debating experience for both new and experienced debaters.

The skills learnt and enhanced throughout the presentation are practical and will help the students to produce a line of argument, rebuttal and work most effectively in a team dynamic - skills that are imperative for the 2022 competition.
