Soaring to New Heights

William Wong was one of six Glen Eira College students progressed to the State Athletics Finals in 2018.  He recently broke the Division Record and won medals at both the SSV State Final and Victorian All Schools competitions.  Here, he writes about his experience.

I first represented Glen Eira College at the division athletics finals. I competed in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and the 90m hurdles. In the 100m and 90m hurdles I won and broke the division record with a time of 12.82 sec in the 100m and 14.54 sec in the 90m hurdles. For the 4x100m relay we also won and broke the division record.

The next competition was the regional athletics finals. At this event, our relay team won. In the 100m I came fourth and in the hurdles I won, set a new personal best of 13.91 and qualified for the State final.

On the 22nd of October was the state final, for the hurdles I had qualified second and in the relay we also qualified second. In the hurdles finals, I came up against one of my good friends who ended up winning. I came second by 0.8 seconds. In the relay, although we qualified second, we came fourth and smashed our personal best by 2 seconds.

Another competition in which I represented the school was the Victorian All Schools. In this event I competed in the 100m and the 90m hurdles. In the 100m I came 12th out of 24 competitors. In the 90m hurdles I came third missing out on Nationals by one spot.

All of these sporting events were a good experience for myself and my friends on the relay teams.

Currently I am training 4 times a week with amazing coaches. Next year I hope to represent Victoria for the 90m and 200m hurdles at the Australian Athletics Championships.
