Track and Field Glory

Each year our House Athletics sports provides a fabulous opportunity for the whole school to come together and demonstrate incredible spirit and passion within a friendly competition.  It also leads some students towards further progression and success within School Sport Victoria competitions.

Six Glen Eira College students progressed to the State Athletics Finals in 2018.  In the following sections you can read about Haddi’s recent medal haul (including a couple of golds), William’s hurdling prowess and the huge improvement our relay team showed to claim fourth place in the state final.  We were also delighted to see Chloe Kaufmann throwing at the state championships and she is determined to throw even further next year.

Haddi El Shorbagy wrote about his season so far.

My season started at District Athletics where I won all throws events and broke records in Shotput and Javelin. From there I progressed into the Regional championships. In the week leading up to the competition, I attended a national athletics camp at the AIS in Canberra. Unfortunately I returned home with a chest infection and had very little time to recover before the Regional competition. I competed ill and managed 3 first place medals and a Shotput Regional record. A couple of weeks later I was in the ring again competing at the SSV State championships, ending up with a personal best and gold medal in the Discus event. I came third place in the Javelin and Fourth place in Shotput.

One week later I was back at Lakeside Stadium, competing for Glen Eira in the State All Schools Championships. This competition is run by Athletics Victoria for all high school aged students regardless of what type of school they attend. At this competition I threw 3 personal bests in Discus, Javelin and Hammer Throw, as well as a gold medal in Javelin and a silver medal in Shotput. These performances qualified me for the Australian All Schools Championships in Cairns next month.

I enjoy competing, it allows me to make many new friends and motivates me to do my best. I look forward to representing Glen Eira College in future competitions.
